Good evening!
I have the picture below with the unity where my great-grand father fought. I know he fought in the Austrian-Hungary army, in an unity maybe based in Cernauti. But I don't know abything else. Which type of army? Any other details that can help me in my research? Thank you very much for your support. |

You can post large images using http://postimage.org/ or http://www.flickr.com/

They all wear a Dragoner (cavalry) uniform, actually a Dragoner Helm can be seen in front of the soldiers.
The only Dragoner unit that I know recruited Romanians was the Dragoner-Regiment „Erzherzog Albrecht“ Nr. 9 (50% Romanians). Any info or stamps on the back of the photo? What was the name, place and year of birth of your great-grandfather? Maybe I can find his name if he was wounded. ![]() This post has been edited by ionionescu on January 20, 2014 04:53 pm |

Thank you for all the information. Very interesting.
The name of my great grand father was Giosan Alecsa (sometimes spelled Alexie or Alexa). I don't know if he was wounded, I know he was a prisoner in the Tzarist Empire. If you can help with any info about him, or any clues to go further with my genealogic researches, thank you very much. Have a nice evening! |

I forgot the year of birth: 1886 in Ciocanesti, Bucovina (actualul judet Suceava).
There is nothing written on the back of the photo. Thanks very much! |

I searched with Giosan, but I didn't find any Giosan Alecsa, just three wounded as shown below:
![]() free image hosting I also searched with his birth place Ciocănești (Czokanestie - Czokaneszty) but although a few Romanian names appear in the list, Giosan Alecsa is not there. It is not uncommon that some names were missed in the K.u.k. Armee Verlustliste so I guess his name does not appear. |

I have no idea where you could search, I heard a request costing 35 euro can be placed with the Vienna Military Archives (http://oesta.gv.at/site/5001/default.aspx) but I don't know how it works nor if you have any chance to find any info.
