Dear forum members,

Until now, with the help of some (former) forum contributors, we know the following facts about the SMGs in use with the Romanian army:
- They entreated in use at least in mid-1942, according to at least three sources: 1) the provisional field manual for their use, printed that year - unknown month/date, 2) some data provided by Soviet military intelligence, referring to MP 40 and 3) to some organization&equipment tables/situations belonging to some Romanian artillery units, dating from 1942 and referring to MP 28
- The models in use were MP 28, MP 40, MP 41, Beretta 1938 A, Orita 1941, Mauser Schnellfeuer 1932 (for the paratroopers, until 1943?), captured Soviet PPD and PPSh (from 1941) and few German Sturmgewehr 44 after August 1944
- We also know that at lest according to the OoB section of this site, and to Dutu A., Dobre F., Loghin L. Armata Romana in al doilea razboi mondial (1941-1945) - Dictionar Enciclopedic, Editura Enciclopedica, 1999, at least in some units the SMGs seem to had been in regular use use since 1941 (http://worldwar2.ro/oob/?article=798)

NOW, my more specific questions are the following:

1. a) Do we have any specific date, referred to by an official document, regarding the entry in use of the Romanian SMGs, since obviously the date/year advanced previously on this site/forum (Autumn 1943) is incorrect?
cool.gif Are there any official documents stating the entry in use of SMGs to a date earlier than mid-1942 (what types)? Apparently the 1942 provisional field manual for their use was the first one, but one cannot be certain of that

2. WHEN did the various SMG types and models entered in use (I'm referring to the war/prewar years) and IN WHAT NUMBERS?

3. Did the Romanian army had also the (improved) Beretta 1938/42 in use, as specified on the site? Are there ANY documents/photos (since its appearance was visibly different from mod. 1938 A) to prove that?

4. According to data presented on various sites, MP 41 was a derivation of MP 40 which entered in use in 1943. BUT, in the provisional field manual presented in the forum (with pictures also included on the website), dating (mid)1942, we can see photos and instructions regarding it. So, what was the truth?

Thank you very much!

According to historian Ioan Scafes, in this article

https://www.historia.ro/sectiune/general/ar...e-la-stalingrad

The first SMGs to enter service in large numbers were during the 1942 campaign: 5.000 Beretta 1938A from Italy and 10.600 MP40 from Germany, all ordered in 1941. The first Orita entered service in October 1942 (666 pieces)

He also states that the Ro Army enterd the war in 1941 without a significant quantity of SMGs. I'm willing to bet those were MP28 and MP41 which were supplied by the SS to the Iron Guard. After the latter's defeat in the January 1941 rebellion, those SMGs were very likely put into service with the Army, seeing action after 22 June 1941.
