Romanian Navy and Crimea

Fruntas Group: Members Posts: 54 Member No.: 18 Joined: June 23, 2003	Did the Romanian Navy suported the Axis troops on the Crimea front? And I am not asking about any supplies they might have delivered.

Admin Group: Admin Posts: 4350 Member No.: 3 Joined: February 11, 2003	No, the Romanian Navy supported the forces in Crimea only with the NMS Delfinul submarine and by shipping and escorting supplies. The only shore bombardment in support of the infantry happened at Odessa in 1941 and at Cape Kerson in May 1944, when the troops were being evacuated from Crimea.

Admin Group: Admin Posts: 4350 Member No.: 3 Joined: February 11, 2003	It was mostly because they did not have adequate ships for shore bombardment: cruisers, battleships, which could fire from beyond coastal artillery range. Thus the Romanian destroyers would not have been at risk. But generally because of the size of the Soviet surface fleet, the Romanian Navy stuck to convoying and defensive missions. The episode with the two batteries destroyed by the NMSRegele Ferdinand during the Kerson evacuation was a situation without another solution.
