Orașul sacrificat. Al Doilea R. M. la Ploiești, Lucian Vasile / AEDU 2016

De curând a apărut ediția a doua, revizuită și adăugită, a volumului „Orașul sacrificat. Al Doilea Război Mondial la Ploiești”. Cartea urmărește viața orașului între 1939 - 1944, din perspectivă urbană și socială și încearcă să surprind impactul războiului în viața cotidiană. O descriere ceva mai largă puteți găsi mai jos:

În 1939, Ploieștii erau un oraș prosper, bogat și plin de încredere în viitor său. Peste doar 5 ani, sute de clădiri erau incendiate sau distruse, străzile pline de moloz și gropi și doar câteva mii de oameni mai rămăseseră în oraș. Bombardamentele americane, dar și cele sovietice și britanice, transformaseră radical urbea lui „ce bei?” într-o așezare-fantomă. Cartea „Orașul sacrificat. Al Doilea Război Mondial la Ploiești” surprinde poveștile de viață cotidiană ale ploieștenilor din ultimii ani ai unei Românii peste care comunismul încă nu-și pusese amprenta. În timp ce autoritățile se pregăteau să înfrunte atacurile aeriene, oamenii se distrau, avea temeri, își făceau speranțe, trăiau decepții sau iubeau. Al Doilea Război Mondial a reprezentat o traumă pentru comunitatea ploieșteană, adeseori uitată, prinsă între perioada interbelică idealizată și cea comunistă.

Când am ieșit din casă – câteva case învecinate distruse. Centrul ardea. Numai cioburi de geamuri și moloz. A fost ultima zi normală pe care am avut-o în viața mea și în orașul Ploiești. Dimineața, înainte de bombardament, când am ieșit în oraș, magazinele deschise, lumea se ducea la treburi, trăsurile – că erau trăsuri pe vremea aia, nu mașini – circulau în mod normal, zarzavagii cu zarzavaturi, iaurgii cu iaurturi, fructarii cu coșurile… Toată viața normală a orașului Ploiești și a României antebelice. După ce s-a terminat bombardamentul ăsta, toate astea au fost terminate pentru totdeauna. Orașul era o ruină… nu mai era nimic normal. Și nici n-a mai fost vreodată ceva normal.

And the Soviet bombing attempts, yes, they happened, but did they really succeed to harm the city ? I am thinking of the Soviet raids from 1941.
Honestly I do not know if they also tried later, in 1944.

I tried to analyze the impact of every air raid (no matter if it was an American, a British or a Soviet one) on the local community (perceptions, thoughts, hopes, fears etc). The Soviet attempts to attack Ploiești were important as a first reflection of the war on the daily life of the people of the city, despite the fact that it had a minor military role.

And speaking about the British bombardments in 1944 against Ploiești, there were 2: on 26th of July and on 17th/18th of August.

LE: and on 13th september 1942 i found the records of an unidentified raid against Ploiești and the airplanes came from east (?). / page 105-107

Thank you for the information.
I think that most of the Romanians are not aware of the British involvement in bombing Ploesti.

And regarding the raid that came from the east on September 13, 1944, it could have been a clever move of Luftwaffe, assuming that the attention of the defenders of Ploesti should have been focused toward north - west (in that moment).
This is just a guess, not an attempt to make a statement.
