Soon to be published " Odesa 1941-1944.Life under ocupation " by Professor Oleg Budnitsky
http://www.stanford.edu/group/isaac_babel/...ence/people.htm

For now, only in russian, but,i'm sure, due to its subject,it will be translated in romanian.Recently,i listened to his presentation of his work (aprox 45 min.) on radio " Echo Moskvy " I'll provide the link ) and was pleasantly surprised how equilibrated, objective and free of usual "patriotic" propaganda the book is.It presents political, economical and socio-cultural life of odesites as it was never presented beforev in soviet/russian historiografy.
An anecdotical morsel : After the Red Army reocupied the city,a special comission was collcting evidence about the terror and hardships of romanian ocupation. One odesite testified that the life was so hard that there were days they had to get on "only on bread and salami ".....The document is in Odessa historyb museum.

Does he deal with the military aspects, too? For example, there was an important airfield (actually more than one) near Odessa, that was functional throughout the war.

No,its strictly about daily life in Odessa.Interestingly,he dismantels the myth about thousands of partisans fighting,in the catacombes against ocupation, admiting that there was next to no resistance.Odesites were to buissy opening 6000 private shops,560 restaurants,440 bakeries and over 1000 barber shops or going to Opera, philarmonic,a dozen of theatres, circus or studiing in the University.Of course, the masacre that followed the blowing of NKVD building is fully analized and compared to the same trick used by NKVD in Kiev.
Once again,i have to remind that i did not read the book (yet ).

Сollegue, don't cheat people. It is talked in text, that this records("bread and salami") of schoolboy, kept in a museum and that his dad worked in the Opera theater (where he had salary, bonuses and food gifts) .About the special commission in this episode not tolked...

This is a typical reaction when a historical myth is busted.

I met such reactions, or worse, on this forum related to other myths that were (attempted to be) shattered.

As the script of transmission says, the book is not ready yet. So, the title can be uncertain.
For some details of life in Odessa, try a Google-search on "Gherman Pantea"...
