In the main page of your link:

If they are asking for anecdotes, I am wondering how much they care for really sad stories, that made 99.9% of WWI.

Anecdotes are not jokes. The difference is that a "joke" is an "amusing story" that does not have to be true whereas an "anecdote" has to be true. An example of an anecdote would be the story of, for example, when Mitt Romney asked "why windows do not open on a plane". There are plenty of true yet amusing stories in history like the time when...(insert funny but true story here).
The word comes from Greek and means something like "tale you haven't heard before". It is the basis of journalism.

An anecdote is not necessarily a true story, but has to have a usually witty point. However, it is based on rear life situations and involves real life people, important or not.

I included several anecdotes, as footnote, in the manuscript on the Hungarian Armed Forces I am currently working on. One of them is a slightly different version to what was written in the following study, and it's a good example of what an anecdote is:
