January 20 1941: With Hitler tacit support, Antonescu suppresses an uprising by the Iron Guard in Rumania. I am looking for more info about that.

It happened that my aunt was a public functionary at the Bucharest town hall when the Iron Guard uprising took place. She told me that they were evacuated from the building with the help of Germans soldiers that made a belt to secure the safe passage of Romanian functionaries. She spoke with quite esteem of the action of Germans that day. Unfortunatelly she could not tell me more because she suffered with a form of sclerosis and talking with her was not easy.

Dragos & Dénes,

I appreciate the info and the picture. What was the objective of the Iron Guard in that uprising?

Regards

The conflict between Antonescu and the Iron Guard was inevitable, because the power sharing wasn't working. During his second meating with Hitler, on 14 January 1941, the general expressed his disapproval of their actions and ideas and the instanility they brought. Hitler, probably already informed by the situation, let him know who he supported.

Thus, after his return to Bucharest, he started to act. On 19 January he abolished the Romanization commissioners. On 20 January he dismissed the Internal Affairs Minister, general Constantin Petrovicescu. On 21 January, all Legionnaire prefects and quaestors were replaced.

On 20 January were the first street rallies and Tuesday, 21 January, the rebellion started. By 23 it had been put down.

From the official report:
Army: 21 killed and 53 wounded
Rebels and civilians
- in Bucharest: 236 killed (of which 118 Jews), 254 wounded
- rest of the country: 117 killed, 73 wounded
Total: 374 killed, 380 wounded.

I propose to all members who want to continue the discussion about this thema around this problem: was it indeed a Iron Guard rebellion or a well disguised coup of Antonescu (and the Army), supported by Hitler's Germany? There are many books and articles that speak of this hypothesis presented by me, with documents and testimonies, so that a well reasoned discussion is possible!
