As the title suggests...

One small note : While this topic is posted in the Romanian Armed Forces in WW2 section, this question does not refer strictly to World War 2.

Can anybody provide any sources, a book title/ISBN,anything at all that would definitely show that Romania fielded, either before or after 1945 for any significant period ( more than 2-3 months ) Panther tanks?

Thank you.

Hallo IAR80,
Romania received after WWII, in spring 1946, from soviet army deposits, 52 medium and 13 heavy tanks, german captures, Pz.IV and Pz.V. All of them equipped the newly created Armored Brigade, who later was melted in the new mechanised and tank divisions "Tudor Vladimirescu" and "Horea Closca si Crisan". The 13 Panthers received by the troops were D2, A and G types, and remained in use until 1954.

Top Gun magazine, do you know an issue number?

Honestly I was expecting a more ... academic source.

IIRC the article was by Horia Serbanescu & C. Scafes, researchers at the National Military Museum and authors of many works on the Romanian Army. The information was also published in one of their Dorobantul series books. I think that is academical enough.

If by "fielded" you mean deployed on the front line, then the answer is no, Romania did not deploy any tank more advanced than the Pzkpfw IV during WWII, so there is no source that would say it did.

Scafes, Cornel I; Scafes, Ioan I; Serbanescu, Horia Vl (2005). Trupele Blindate din Armata Romana 1919-1947. Bucuresti: Editura Oscar Print. ISBN 973-668-084-3

Page 41. The book is in English and Romanian. I don't know if it's still for sale at the Military Museum in Bucharest. If you google a bit, you'll find the book uploaded somewhere (I think it was on webshots). Academic enough? biggrin.gif
