My father (71 years) told me how he witnesed as child the Easter Bombardment in Brasov in 1944 (16th of April?). He told me that a lot of bombs landed (by mistake?) in the trenches near Tampa Mountain where many people were seeking protection (more sofisticated tunnels were diged only after this event). The consequence was that hundred of people were killed durring this raid. He told me that he left immediately Brasov in a truck that was used in order to transport dead bodies and this was full of blood.
I've tried to find more information about this story, but almost nothing is available in the internet. It is strange that only 66 years after the event nobody seems to remeber such tragedy. Maybe it is also the memory of my father that is augmenting the facts, but I would like to know if anybody has any additional information on this bombardment. |

Unfortunately, Narcis Ionuţ Gherghina passed away when only 29, so you cannot ask him any more. Gen. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on April 06, 2010 05:36 pm |

For God's sake, Narcis died! I'm so sorry, I didn't knew about his death! What happened to him? I didn't knew him very well, he just asked me to allow him to publish some of my photos made on Carol II line, we changed a number of emails, he seemed such a kind guy! I'm shaken now finding out that he passed away! |

I have info about the plane but there are some difference for the crash place name. The plane is a B-24 H Sn 41-29344, 459 BG, 756 BS, Pilot Lt. Danko Elmer Frank. It crashed near Campulung on 6 mai '44. Five members were KIA and five were taken POW. From romanian documents 3 members were indentified and buried in Boteni cemetery ( Laicai Muscel comunity) The 3 members were: 1. Navigator - Flight officer Robert W.Milward. His body was found on the land of Ion Grigorescu ( punctul Holobor). 2. RW gunner - Staff Sergeant Raymond R Pate 3. Tail gunner - Staff Sergeant Marshal D Collins. A fourth body, of Sergeant Kilinsky was indentified by the pilot Danko few days later when was taken to the crash place. The pilot Danko also reported that he didn't find any trace of the fifth member missing Sergeant Stanley Schussel. From the MACR report it is noted that the plane blew up in the air. TAZ 1 if you want more details sent me a PM. |
