According to "Istoria militară a poporului român" (1987), during Alexandru Ioan Cuza’s reign Romanian army (the lancers/cavalry) was issued, among other weapons, with “6 rounds French model 1864 revolvers”. Does anybody know what type of revolvers were those (percussion, paper cartridge)? And more broadly, what is in fact a “percussion revolver”? Is it loading from the front of the cylinder, like the muskets, or “the normal way” (making for example a parallel with Dyrese or Chassepot paper cartridge breach-loading and firing mechanisms)? Thank you! |

you would load the charge directly into the drum, though laterally, not through the muzzle. each chamber would have a percussion hat which would ignite the charge.
loading a percussion revolver is quite time consuming, therefore more than one would be carried. i heared of US cavalry carrying 5-6 revolvers each. |
