I have a postcard, showing a "period lithograph", which depicts the Battle of Skit.
The rear of the card is blank except for the inscription: The scene looks 19th century to me. There is a Romanian tricolour on the right hand side of the picture, so is it possibly from the War of Independence? Any information would be post welcome but I am very much interested in date and location. I did look on the internet but all it came up with was related to skit music! |

I think it's the battle for the bridge over Ogest (Ogosta?) River, defended by Romanian "dorobanti" and firefighters, on 9 November 1877 when Turkish troops withdrew from Rahova (Oryahovo)

This was the battle at Skit bridge, on 9 November 1877, between the Romanians and the Turks. |

http://www.mnir.ro/temp/album/album.html It's not far-fetched for Schit to have been translated phonetically as Skit in French/English. -------------------- I

I've seen in many Romanian texts the name as "Skit", so it's not that unusual in Romanian either. |
