Hi, guys!
Not long ago I red a book about a former SS officer from a partisajager unit, Hans Wagemueller, who fought from Tscehoslovacia at the end of ww2, via Switzerland to North Africa in French Foreign Legion, and from here in Indochina against vietnamese comunists. The name of the book : "Devil's Guard". The electronic book used to be at http://www.xs4all.nl/~brandb/devils_guard.htm but the link is not working anymore. For me the book was exceptional, probably the best book ever write about a common combatant from ww2 german army, and especially from SS. The book is discussed, some people say that it's fiction, other people say that the book is based on true facts. The author said that he personally knew the main character of the book, H. Wagemueller (albeit he said that he had to change the name of the character, for his protection and at his request; so H. Wagemueller is a fictional name). The author gives some settlement names (villages, towns) from Tschehoslovacia, Germany, Switzerland and Indochina, so if the characters from the book really existed, they can be traced finding out if in ww2 in Tscehoslovacia were some partisanjager SS unit(s). In my personal humble opinion, the book is at least based on real facts and characters. Can anyone help me to find a link were the book can be readed, please? |

Hallo 21 inf if a author puts as much "true" detail into his work by doing some basic re-searching of town names, freely available on any good road maps available, into his book it makes it all the more believable by the readers. Most story tellers write fantasy woven around known facts, in this book the main character is supposed to have ended up in Turkey working as an adviser to the Turkish Military, he even claims to have offered to help train the Americans for combat in Viet-Nam based on his experience, again I stress the word claimed. Wether or not, any of this can be attached to a real specific character, such as "H. Wagemueller " will take quite a lot of research work and traveling on behalf of the researcher. Kevin in Deva. |

NCR, I believe, as far I remember, that you served in the army.
What is your opinion, it is something true in the book, and what is that true, giving the fact that I presume you red the book or at least you heard about it? |

Hallo 21 inf
My opinion is (and I did read the book a few times) that the book is a work of fiction, yes, the French Foreign Legion did recruit many members of the German Armed Forces immediately after WW2, including members of the SS amongst others. Yes its true that many of the Germans "volunteers" after finishing their training were immediately dispatched to Indo-China, where the French were engaged in a war with the "Viet-Minh" a for runner of the "Viet-Cong" who the US faced a few years later. Some of the claims in the book have to be taken with a pinch of salt such as making silencers for rifles from bamboo and mud!!!! The book is a good read though. Kevin in Deva. |
