Found a rather interesting picture... :?
Ion Dobran's 1944 109 has a swastika on the tail besides the romanian flag...
Yes the images are from a Simulator, but the Photograph and artwork are real and genuine. Explain why such symbol is used on Romanian planes, AND especially AFTER romanian pulled out of the axis....  |

The swastika was leftover from captured Luftwaffe aircraft.
By the Spring of 1945 (when the enclosed photos were made), the paint covering the Hakenkreuz chipped and faded away, and nobody bothered to repaint it. Dénes |

When fishermen found in their nets the wings and then the fuselage of a Bf 109 G near Cape Tuzla, all the Romanian paint was gon except some traces of red, yellow and blue from a cocard. The German paint was intact after half century ! The wings were taken to the Muzeul Aviatiei in Bucharest and the fuselage with the engine were lost at sea in summer 1988.
That was the quality of the paint used by Romanian mechanics and that explains the svastika on the tail. |

Could they not just "paint-over" ? Where we not by now flying with the Soviet Airforce as ally? I don't think they would have liked 1st) an ally flying the Me-109, and 2nd) an ally flying a Me-109 with a Swastika on it's tail.. :? :? And what kind of plane is this one???
Could it be IAR 80 with an inline engine? Deimler Benz 601? |

Paint was not so easy available on the airfields as local population needed it badly to repair their homes. Sometimes they used what was available in the area and there is no wonder it washed away. The picture was taked after such an accident, as nobody would dare to have a cross ! ON THE AIRCRAFT. There were cases when Soviet AA gunners shot down Romanian aircrat coming home, as they neglected to change Michael Cross with cockardes !
On the other side, there must have been a real mess, as we can see the rests of an IAR 80 recovered from Cehia with yellow engine in 1945... |
