Post this on the WWI part of this forum, but decided that the biography part might be more appropriate.
Am looking for biographical information on the 2 men who commanded the Romanian cavalry divisions in August 1916 at the beginning of Romanian action in World War I--Ioan Herescu (1 Cavalry) and Gregori Basarabescu (2 Cavalry). Know nothing about them except that there is a Ioan Basarabescu who commands 9 Infantry Division at the outbreak of war and I presume the Basarabescus are related. Any info appreciated.

RHaught,

Let me look into this. On my grandfather's side ( Col. Basarabescu in WWII), his dad was a Brigade General in WWI.

I'll get you more details and a picture of him, but all I know so far is that he was the CO of King Ferdinand's Guard Regiment (as a colonel, and prior to WWI, of course). I also know he fought in WWI as a general (cavalry, I think), but unfortunately I don't have any other details.
However, I believe his name was Victor Basarabescu, and he was from Targoviste.

Up until now I've been researching my grandmother's side of the family, but my grandfather's side actually had a larger military tradition. There were several senior officers in that family.

Thanks for the offer and the help. It is entirely possible that the project has gotten the first name wrong.

Hi Rich,

I've been looking into family albums, but I can't seem to trace back to the Basarabescu you are looking for. Here is what I found, in chronological order:

Constantin Basarabescu, Chief of "Serviciul de Intendenta" during the 1877 war:

Colonel Victor Basarabescu, CO 1st Regiment "Vinatori" King Ferdinand. I believe he also commanded a brigade, but I don't know which one.

Here is another picture of him, holding the robe of King Ferdinand in a royal procession:

His brother, Alexandru Basarabescu (officer, unidentified rank), dead in the battle of Turtucaia (Balkan War)

His elder son, Major Gheorghe Basarabescu, died after having contracted tuberculosis in WWI:

His younger son, Colonel Paul Basarabescu (fought only in WWII). In the picture, in his last active post, Chief of Staff of the 10th Infantry Division, 1945

His brother-in-law, General Gavanescu (who I believe fought in WWI):

Plus a couple of other junior cavalry officers which I won't include pictures of.
As you can see, a military family by tradition, so it's quite possible that Gen. Grigore Basarabescu may be somehow related to the family, but I just don't know, and unfortunately my grandfather's family album doesn't go that far back.
However, if you find out any information about him, please let me know, as it would interest me.

Thanks.
