this summer i have visited Sasca Montana. It is a mountain village in the Caras Severin county, near the Yugoslav border, about 50 km from Moldova Noua.

While visiting the Caholic Cemetery , located on a hill, isolated and (sadly!) abandoned today, I found a cross stating : "5 soldati germani". Unforunately, no names, dates, units are mentioned. From what I know, in 1944 german units retreating from Yugoslavia crossed the danube at Moldova Noua and tryied to escape to hungary via timisoara. They were unsuccesfull in their attempt at occupying Timisoara . My question is : can any body shed some light on this ? Do you know waht german units were involved ? were there fights around Sasca Montana ( the area is very suitable for guerilla type action, so maybe partisans were involved) or maybe the soldiers were wounded who died and were just buried there? and a second question : any other german war grave sites in the Banat region? |
