AP Press Wire Photo was taken in Bucharest. What is interesting is that the photograph is identified as Boarder Guards yet the soldiers wear spike helmets and white aquilettes of the military Gendarne.
The caption reads as follows : "March 19, 1939. Buchaerst--Rumania gets braced-- To the situation created by Nazi Germany's eastward thrust of last week was added the news tonight that 500,000 troops, called from a dozen classes of the Rumanian army, were guarding the Rumanian frontier. Shown above at a recent review is a mobile machine gun detachment. Backbone of Rumania's reinforced frontier defenses was the standing army of 200,000 men, but an even larger numbered of reserves had been called to the colors. Heavy strength was mobilized along the southern border of Carpatho-Ukraine." |
