Although I am not a fan of awards, I found this particular example interesting:

This Grand Cross of Faithful Service was awarded to the Portuguese premier António de Oliveira Salazar, possibly just before the war. Changed hands at a Lisbon's auction house for quite a hefty sum!

You are welcome. I would like to know more about the circumstances surrounding the atribution of this award to Salazar.

The auction page mentioned that the set included the award certificate. If one could get from them the date on the certificate, it would be possible to find something about the circumstances of the award as well.

Yes, I also thought about that. I haven't got any answer yet, which is hardly surprising. After all, auction houses tend to be discreet... The other possibility (the hard way round) is to search for the date amid the heaps of paperwork of Salazar's personal archive in Lisbon. Of course, this will be like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
