A Hungarian colleague of mine sent me the following excerpt from the diary of a local church he just found:
"On Dec. 23, 1944 I placed to rest in the cemetery of Kocsér the following Rumanian airman: Jonescu Johan. He was deadly wounded in an accident by his comrade. Jonescu was born in Bucharest, was of Orthodox religion and was 23 years old. He left behind his wife. Kocsér 1 X. 1945, Armand Lenyovszky priest." Does anyone have detail of this airman and circumstances of his death? His proper name was probably Ioan Ionescu - the most common Rumanian name possible... Gen. the most common name possible is Ion Popoescu, check a phonebook.  |

There were several Ioan Ionescu's:
- one was the observer on the IAR-37 s/n 39 shot down by a Soviet I-153 in August 1940 - one (Ioan D. Ionescu) reached the rank of lieutenant and received the Virtutea Aeronautica Order Knight class - another one (Ioan St. Popescu) was a sergeant. |

The closest that comes is Lt.rez.obs. (D)iamandi Ionescu of Esc. 12 obs., MIA over Hungary on Jan. 3, 1945 aboard his I.A.R. 39.
Perhaps the date of his disappearance is incorrect. Any further details? Gen. Dénes |
