I don't know how it got in this shape, but in this picture you can see that it was normal at the beginning. I think someone tried to enlarge the volume. |

Nice find Claudiu, the mess kits and canteens are rare as they were used by the army after the war, until replacement when they were transformed into raw material.
For reenactment, I think, a German mess kit would be easier to find. And German mess kits were used by Romanian soldiers (there are many pictures on both fronts). |

C'mon it's not German and not from WWII; "952" probably means 1952, the year of production.
I have one that is identical only that it is not painted, it is brand new and I got it as a gift from a hungarian friend; he told me it was the standard Hungarian canteen for the communist era. I will try to take tomorrow some pictures. |

Thanks for the reply. I actually tought, that this is a Romanian WW2 canteen, because it's similar to Caludius' one from the first post. |

Baczoni Tamás, my friend from the Military Historical Museum of Budapest, told me that this is a M.1950 hungarian army canteen. The stamp is for the Honvéd Ruhatár – HR - (Army Clothing Depot), the date: 1952 and the number 1 is maybe for the number of the inspector-officer. He said that these canteens are rare today, you can easily find the M1960 version (the same shape, but with different markings and different colour – somewhat lighter green), but not the M1950. |
