Hi Ronny, Your question is easy to be asked More than 250 bombers and 50 fighters (allied planes) were lost due to batlle actions over Romanian teritory in '43-'44. Also have a question for you. Why you need all this info ? Anyway I will give you an excerpt from my reserch. On 6 june'44 near Galati village, romanian ace Bazu Cantacuzino (9thFG) shot down a P-51 from one of USAF shutlle raids missions. The plane was a P-51B, Nr.61 Sn: 42-103369 from 325FG, 318FS the pilot Lt. J. Mumford made a force landing (after been hit by Bazu 109G) near Vardita Tighina village, the pilot was last seen going towards russians lines (probably to Poltava) but he didn't reach the allies and was reported MIA. Below the picture with burning wrecks of (Mumford ) P-51B and Cantacuzino standing near him. Source Aeromagazin. ![]() And the color profile of Mumford P-51 B nr 61. Source Aeromagazin. Is that the case when Bazu waved to the American, from his plane to stay and not to run?

Yes, it was his first Mustang and 9th Fighter Group's first encounter with the 15th Air Force. Bazu was not at his first clash with American aircraft, because he had been in the 7th Fighter Group at the beginning of the year.

Here are two photos (of poor quality unfortunately) from the book Vanatorul IAR-80 - istoria unui erou necunoscut by Dan Antoniu and George Cicos, Modelism, 2000, page 202
![]() ![]() They are remains of some of the P-38s shot down by the 6th Fighter Group on 10 June 1944. |

The wrecks are from the P-38 nr 32 ( 71sq, 1FG) shot down around Popesti Leordeni airfield. The 71 sq lost that day 8 planes and 2 damaged in the dogfight with IAR 81C from 6FG. |

I own these original photos. If needed, I can post better scans; however, the originals are very small and not the sharpest. Gen. Dénes |

Could be, I don't know.
Most of my photos are reproductions of the originals. However, this pair of prints are original, over 60 years old prints. I believe the photos posted above are also reproduction of the originals. But I could be wrong. So let me rephrase the sentence: "I own the original photos". Gen. Dénes This post has been edited by Dénes on January 05, 2006 03:36 pm |

Did anyone research who was the unfortunate pilot of 'Black 32'?

We all were told that this picture shows Lt. Mumford's P-51. However, what are the proofs? The ultimate proof, the aircraft's serial number on the tail, is not visible. Perhaps is it an SMP photo, and the details were mentioned in the explanation printed on the print's rear side? Gen. Dénes |
