Special versions of the pilot and observers badges were produced and awarded in limited numbers (just 5 of each type) in 1928 to the members of the Romanian team that won the Air Contest of the Little Entente and Poland that year.
The badges were normal pilot and observer badges in use, but made of silver and with the addition of golden laurel wreaths. Here is the list of recipients: Pilots: 1. Stefanescu Gheorghe 2. Burduloiu Traian 3. Ceausu Gheorghe 4. Cpt. Popescu Romeo 5. Lt. Atanase R. Observers: 1. Lt-col. Protopopescu (the commander of the squadron) 2. Cpt. Emanoil Ionescu 3. Cpt. Casolteanu 4. Lt. The upper badge was carried by Romanian pilots on the uniform collar from 1913 till 1915. In 1915 the well-known pilot and observer breast badges, decorated with King Ferdinand cipher, were adopted. Until 1923 Romanian Air Force officers haven’t their own uniforms. Usually they wore the uniform of their initial branch of service decorated with M.1913 or M.1915 metallic badges as a symbol of their aeronautical specialization. The winged wheel bellow was the symbol of the Romanian Railroads (CFR), adopted in 1893, and was carried by junior employees on their kepis. Senior railroad officials had embroidered winged wheels. |

 I'm thrilled to find out what this badge was for. I thought that it could have been issued for extreame heroism or valor during WW1 combat. Thanks for the info. |
