The colour of tunic collar and cuffs (yellow) and the Hungarian style uniform indicate that the soldier might belongs to the 2nd Infantry Regiment “Alexander I Kaiser von Russland”, located in Brasov (Kronstadt) – if he had yellow metal buttons or to the 31st Infantry Regiment “Pucherna”, located in Sibiu (Hermannstadt) - if he had white metal buttons.

The photo, that represents a nice view from Budapest around 1900, is not very clear but if your ancestor was from Codlea, near Brasov, he might be drafted in the 2nd IR. Probably on the general issue photo background, the photographer added the head of your grand-grand-father and adapted the colour of the collar and cuffs according the specific facings of the regiment.

well im guessing these pictures are from WWI.
so i think the first picture the guy on the right is wearing a sergeant's uniform. almost definelty a frontline commander of some sort. the second picture could be different but i dont think so. my grandmother has many pictures of my grand uncles (and one grandaunt) who fought in wars and one of them has a similar uniform.

QUOTE (Dénes @ January 03, 2006 03:47 pm)
I am wondering which Army branch was the soldier shown at left in?
Perhaps he wears a formal cavalry uniform.

@Denes: both solders are Dutch, the one from the left wears a Marechaussees (Royal Dutch Military Police,) uniform. See also: http://www.marechausseesporen.nl/pagina_br...ieuweschans.htm
