Hi,
There is no mention of the name of the Soviet Ace Pilot shot down by Cantacuzino on the http://www.elknet.pl/acestory/cantacuzino/...cantacuzino.htm website,
so I would like to hear from those who know more about this event.
Who was this Ace?
His Yak fighter had a red engine hood which meant he had more than 25 Kills.

If anyone has a picture or illustration of this Ace's Fighter post it here.

PS: I remeber hearing about an event in which a Romanian ace fought a soviet ace near a bridge on the danube? ..and our Pilot chased by the Soviet flew under the Bridge and made a big loop and ended up on the Russian's tail after which he shot him down.
An incredible aerobatic performance. Could this be the event? Is Cantacuzino the one in this story?

According to Denes' research it was Nikolay F Khimushin (11 kills).

(1) If his fighterplane had a Red Nose, that means he had more than 25 kills, how come only 11 ?
Maybe Dénes can tell us more.

& (2) I found this great Russian Website about their Aviators, and War heroes, they look pretty tough those Russians.. . At the index, I was looking for Khimushin ,he should be here...But there is no pilot that died on the 27th of July 1943..
Also my Russian is not so good, Niet Panimaiyu Cyrillic alphabet! smile.gif !! tongue.gif

Here's the main index for the adress, ALL Soviet aces are liste there
http://www.airforce.ru/staff/who_is_who/

There is a Nikolai Cherkashin who died in 1943, on an unknown date,
but looking in the "K" and "Ch" lists I was still unable to find the man.

You have to select carefully your sources. Where did you find the "fact" that if a VVS fighter plane had a red nose it must had been the mount a 25-victory ace? Perhaps in one of Vasile Tudor's books? I think it's pure B.S.* As mentioned earlier, don't believe everything that's published...

Why should it be there? That's not the right source. Again, you have to find the right source first. Check out this one: http://users.accesscomm.ca/magnusfamily/ww2urs.htm

No.

On 27 July 1943, his wing was suppose to escort a German recon plane. But because of technical problems, only "Bâzu's" airplane could be fueled in time. When he reached the rendezvous point, the German plane was already under attack by a Yak with a red engine hood (that meant over 25 kills). There were another two Yaks which were protecting the other one. He fired from distance and the Soviets turned on him. After 2 minutes he managed to get behind the Soviet ace and shot him down, before the wingmen could intervene. They ran away after seeing what happened to their leader. On his way back to the airfield "Bâzu" also sent a Pe-2 to the ground.

This is from the great http://www.elknet.pl made by the Poles.
http://www.elknet.pl/acestory/cantacuzino/...cantacuzino.htm <- Look here, could the Author of this article be Wrong???
It's signed Victor Niţu.

So,..?Does a red engine hood mean over 25 kills? Yes or No? :?:

Check out the bibliography of Victor's article (bottom of page):
QUOTE
Bibliography: Vasile Tudor, \"Constantin \"Bâzu\" Cantacuzino - Prinţul aşilor\", Editura MODELISM, 2000; Dénes Bernád, \"Rumanian Air Force, the prime decade 1938-1947\", Squadron/Signal Publications, 1999.

Since I certainly didn't write anything like this, it must have been Vasile Tudor's book, as guessed...

Dénes

P.S. BTW, what about the rest of my previous answer to your post?

The Polish page and the official Russian Air Force page (!) contains both mistakes about aces (the Russian also, because they used wrong sources).
Actually, the story about the red nose is simply hilarious. Who wrote it?

I have noticed, that he wrote a book (or books?) about the Rumanian Air Force, but this says me nothing. I don't know his book(s) and IMHO writing a book is an easy task (maybe he is the Rumanian Földi Pál? laugh.gif )

Vasile Tudor lives in Pitesti, where the Air Force archives are located. biggrin.gif

Hehas written several books on ARR, all of which are filled with information, but apparently he also made some mistakes. Just like Denes or any other author. Nobody is perfect.

The 25 kills red nose painting must have come out of the war-era documents. I have tried to find out if Soviet aces had a no. of kills-nose color scheme, but could not confirm it. Anyway I cannot contact Dariusz Tyminski anymore to make changes
