QUOTE (REGAL UNIFORMA COLECTOR @ Nov 26 2005, 04:14 PM)
It looks like the blade broke and was then filed down.

The blade wasn't broke and is not Mini Air Force dagger . This dagger is a marine cadet dagger . I have a similar one. This is the normal way how they looked.

I think there still is some difference between the two daggers. The one from eBay appears to be "pointier" than the one in your collection. Also, the relative length of the blades compared to the handles seems to be different.

Although I know nothing about WW2 ceremonial daggers, this sure looks to my untrained eyes like a re-sharpened Naval Cadet dagger...
I did see similar cases with all sorts of bladed weapons, especially concerning "refinished" bayonets passed off as genuine in shops around Bucharest.

There were not daggers in the Romanian Navy during WW1, at least not officially.
The first Navy daggers were adopted by the Royal Decree Nr. 2008 of 12th of May 1921. According this document, the Navy officers daggers should have the grip made in ivory, of elliptical shape, with the pommel of a crown shape. The cross guard had a rectangular central body decorated with an inclined anchor, and had two extreme round quillons. The blade was straight double edged, and the scabbard was made in brass and had two loose-rings.
These daggers should be carried only on walking out dress. On full dress, evening dress and campaign dress, the M. 1870 Navy swords were still in use.
In fact, as for the swords, a lot of models of daggers, of different shapes, dimensions and origins, were carried. The most well-known producers were Carl Eickhorn and Alex. Coppel of Solingen.
Officially these daggers were distributed to the students of the Navy Academy. The Navy officers should carry M.1930 swords for the ceremonial and gala uniforms. However these weapons were too uncomfortably and expensive and sometimes, for special events, Navy officers continued to carry daggers.
There was also a M.1921 Navy students dagger. This weapon had a straight four edges blade, a spiral black bone grip with a crown-shape pommel and a cross-guard decorated with an anchor. The scabbard was in black leather with locket, chape and loose-rings made in brass. The M.1921 Navy students dagger was officially replaced by the M.1921 Navy officer model in 1930.

Take a look at the angle of the blade , at the shape and you will see it wasn't re-sharpened. It was designed to be so small. The blade has continuous line , not like the re-sharpened blades ....

I can also use some help on the best way to post photos here. I have the 1921 Air Force as well as a couple of Army officers I would like comments on.

Thank you

Jim.
