Designed around a license built Japanese version of the Daimler-Benz DB601A engine, the KI-60 prototype was disappointing. An alternative design was sought out, and the inline engine Tony was created. Erroneously described as a copy of the Bf-109, the Tony began its operational life in New Guinea during April 1943.

Over 2,666 were built before production ended in January of 1945 when the engine factory was destroyed by bomber raids. This Army airplane held up well against the Allied planes, and saw various models including versions with 20mm and 30mm cannons.

So what do you thinks?

I'd say that the king is Me 109.

A third of all 109's were distroyed, not in combat but in takeoff and landing accidents.Experience pilots were killed in such incidents, not to talk about rookies...
Even in the newly born Israeli AF the pilots(most of them WW2 vets complained about the Avia 199s(ME 109) and very quickly changed them with Spits and Mustangs.

Pardon for asking but which were the Israeli World war II vets? blink.gif

There was for instance the Israeli Brigade, which fought in Italy as part of the British Army.

I think KI 61 was a better plane then Me-109. I m sure, he had a better manevrability. I dont know about his armor protection. Yet.

Whatever.......I'm sticking with the Me 109. It had a great amount of firepower, especially Me 109 model E. 2 machineguns and 2 canons (from what I've heard)

Me 109 model E. 2 machineguns and 2 canons was a good figher until 1941, after
he was obsolete, but KI 61 was better
Ki-61-Ia 2 x 20mm MG151/20 in wings, 2 x 12.7 mm mchine guns above engines
and u can't compare a sea figher with a figher.
But we dont forget the main factor u can have a good figher, but a weak pilot

I was trying to say: I thought that the KI 61 was a fighter plane, like the Hawker Huricane or the Supermarine Spitfire. Now do you understand?
