In English the word "retire" can mean both leaving one's job and withdrawing. Perhaps it was just intended to withdraw Korne to Romania, not eject him from the army, but he was regarded by the Germans as too useful at the front to be released and they asked for his retention on operations?

Yes it is. The Romanian equivalent of "to retire" is a retrage (transitive form) or a se retrage (reflexive form). It means both "to withdraw" and "to leave", the latter one not necessarily with the meaning of "going into pension", but it can include that.

Thanks for sharing this photos with us, I hope you don't mind if I add just a little detail, the last photo you posted caught my eye, I think General de brigadă Radu Korne is not the one with the back to the camera wearing the black tankers beret, but he stands in the Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track seen in the image attached below.
