you imply that he (Stalin) wasn't that bad after all,

Maybe a theoretical question for you, but a real one for the Allies at the begining of the war. By the time Stalin quietly let the Polish uprising be crushed, it was pretty evident for all in the west, even for the most sceptical, that Stalin was a nice piece of shit himself. That is for those who weren't already convinced by the Winter War, the Baltic states & Bessarabia. The victims of Stalin are legions, but I'm confident that if Hitler had won WWII the Gods of the universe would still cry...

The question wasn't theoretical at all, even before W.W. 2. Churchill, for example, knew very well who Stalin was. Nevertheless, he made an alliance with him, and said something like: "I would join forces even with the Evil himself to defeat Hitler".

That's your rights to believe in this. However, this is already a "what-if" scenario and that's not history any more, but rather speculation. Luckily, Hitler lost the war, but in the same time unluckily, Stalin not only won but also extended his ugly and leathal grip all over Eastern and Central Europe.

You know, Chandy, there is a statue somewhere in Budapest - I haven't seen it myself yet - which reportedly is a large concrete cube, with a hole in the middle. The entrance to the hole is blocked with prison-like vertical bars. In the hole, there is a greyish figure gripping with his/her hunger-slimmed hands the bars. The dedication sais: "to all those who were not killed, but their life were made miserable". That's what Stalin and his Communist henchmen brought with the "liberation".

So, that's it. An unfortunate choice had to be made. It meant some would fall into a pit but not all into an abyss.

You don't have to force your imagination that much. You just have to extrapolate from what happened to many and extend it naturally to all the rest, like the ideology ultimately dictated.

Not good of course, but still better than dead. There was an end to that tunnel, I'm not sure there would have been one in the second case. You may dismiss all reasoning as non-history, which is certainly true. But it has something important to do with the title of this topic : it is fundamental to the question why Nazi Germany had to go under rather than the Soviet Union.
