On BBC News I have noticed an article mentioning that 15 August 1944 was the 'other D-Day' when 450000 soldiers opened a new front in southern France. It seems to be the first time that I hear about this assault.

Yes, Operation Dragon. Among the Allied troops landed there were many Frenchmen of De Gaulle's Free French forces.

It was 4 American and 3 Free French divisions against the German 19th Army consisting of 8 weak divisions, including the 11th Pz Div. The only real fighting that took place on the shore was at Toulan and Marseilles. After that the Germans were in a quick retreat up through eastern France.

It was called Op.Dragoon, and not Dragon
