You never hear about the woman who served in the Royal Romanian military. Here I am posting several photos of military woman who had both support and combat roles in the military. They served during WW1, between the Wars, and WW2. What was their role, status and acceptance in the military :?:

Probably the best known Romanian lady officer of WWI is Slt. Ecaterina Teodoroiu (born in 1894) who volunteered for combat duty in 1916 and who fell heroically on 22 August 1917 leading her platoon during the battle at Mărăşeşti.

Lieutenant, Possibly an Aerial Bombardment or Air Force Anti-Aircraft unit.
She wears an Air Force uniform with Artillery Shoulder boards in black and Artillery buttons. Collar and sleeve piping are light blue for Air Force. Visor cap insignia is for Air Force on a Black band. Circa 1920's.

The activity of a group of female Medevac pilots of the 'Escadrila Alba' (White Squadron) during W.W. 2 is well known and well documented, too.

Lieutenant... Circa 1920's.

That must have been a very bold, non-conformist, gesture in the 1920s, namely to get photographed as a woman with a cigarette in your mouth.

Mariana Dragescu, the only surviving pilot of the White Squadron, has recently been promoted to lieutenant rank and has been awarded the Knight's cross of the Order of the Star of Romania.

Captain of the Artillery, 1923. Interesting photo in that she wears a ruffled skirt insted of pants.
