This photo shows the officers and the N.C.O's (non-commissioned officers) of the 15th Battalion from the 2nd Mountain Division, in 1942.

They spent so much time in the Caucasus Mountains in 1942, that it would be a good bet it's from there. The photo is in the collection of the photos of the site, but there, for reasons I understand, was reduced to a size which make it useless.

So here is the left side of the photo. The following post will show the right side of the photo.

My grandfather is first in the right of the 3rd row, counting from the bottom.

If we do not consider Bessarabia, we can say that this unit (2nd Mountain Division, including the 15th Battalion) was never on Romanian soil, between June 22, 1941, and its evacuation from Crimea ending in April (May?) 1944.

Here my grandfather (in the middle) is with his two best friends, in Simferopol, Crimea, in October 1943.
Both his friends died there.

In October 1941, the 2nd Mountain Brigade returned home for reorganization and reequipment. It had suffered the most casualties until then of all 3 mountain brigades engaged in 1941 and was no longer of too much combat value. It left for the front in the Caucasus in July-August 1942 (IIRC).

It is interesting what you wrote. I know you are by far more informed than me in this problem.

As far as I know, my grandfather was always in the front line area, between June 1941 and April 1944. First time when he saw his family again was in early May 1944, almost 3 years from the previous time. That's why in my mind was that his unit was always on the front.

In all these years of fight, until 1944, the regiment which included the 15th battalion had its headquarter in Deva, Transylvania. They moved there from Zalau, after August 30, 1940, because Zalau fell into the area given to Hungary.
After August 1944, the headquarter of the unit was moved to Predeal, Muntenia.
The verso of the photo which shows the officers and the N.C.O's (non-commissioned officers) of the 15th Battalion indicates that it was printed by a photo laboratory in Deva.

The picture of the NCO's from the 2nd Mtn. Div. (see a couple of posts above) is quite impressive.

Take a closer look at individual faces in the picture. You can tell that each person was disciplined and ready to fight. In fact, NCO's made up the backbone of the division, IMO.

These guys in the picture were the actual leaders during battles. NCO's and battalion-level officers were the first ones charging and setting the example for the rest of the soldiers.

A courageous bunch...

If someone has other Eastern Front photos, please post them. Let's try to keep this thread going.

Vanatori de Munte Soldier dug in a trench in Northern Jassy / Moldavia, May 11, 1944.

This is a very interesting picture. I am interested because in the same area on 9 May 1944 my uncle died. I was hoping that you may have any other pictures of the area. Thank-you very much!
