I have added more units discovered in the 2nd and 282nd Mechanized Brigades.

There is also the problem of the brigade to which the 300th Mechanized Infantry Battalion belongs to.

The 317th Marine Battalion it's more like a penal battalion of the Navy. A question tghou, are the tank battalions called like this, or is it "artilerie grea"?

I have some friends who are make it his military service at "Marines" (romanian), and all of them complain about heavy training.

I am not sure I understand your question. The xth Tank Battalion is a translation of Batalionul x Tancuri. Why would a tank battalion be called heavy artillery?

It seems the 300th Battalion is part of the 282nd Brigade.

I have identified the 17th and 24th Mountain Batalions as part of the 61st Mountain Brigade.

This is all useful and detailed information, but I was also curious about the higher-level structure.
I found a diagram on the MAPN site, and it seems that the the 2 remaining armies from the end of WWII (1st and 4th) have been re-designated as Army Corps.

Thus, from an organizational standpoint, the Romanian ground forces are now composed of 3 main structures:

1st Army Corps, based in Bucuresti
4th Army Corps, based in Cluj
Comandament "Garzi", based in Bucuresti

No other corps-level structures are present for ground forces. Please see diagram included below:

Hello,

does anybody has information about the organization of the modern romanian battalions and companies

Posted by: refaim June 21, 2007 12:49 pm
cool.gif The 122nd Logistics Brigade is based in Bucharest, i know that, because i've served there in 2005.

I'm not the one to practice 'bumping' month-old threads forward, but it just so happens I'm interested in the structure of Romanian battalions/companies as well.

I've been dabbling around with Steel Panthers (Main Battle Tank,the modern series) and The Operation Art of War III scenario editing,and I'd apreciate it if anyone provided some info on this.

Thanks in advance.

Have all divisional commands been eliminated? The diagrams and lists I've seen all seem to go from Army Corps to Brigade level.

Second question: Any remaining links between historical units and current units, or has everything been completely restructured?

In other words, can one trace the 1st Armored Division (Romania Mare), or the 8th Cavalry Division, to modern-day counterparts (albeit carrying different names)? Or has the reorganization been so complete that all links to the past have been lost?

Hello, neighbours!
I am looking for some information about the structure of the romanian armed forces of today and from the recent past. I hope you could help me. Of course I have seen the orbat at wikipedia. It is pretty good. However I still have many questions:

- I know that the main formations of the land forces are the 1st, 2nd and 4th divisions. Before the formation of the 2nd division the 1st had 27 and 4th had 20 mobilization centres. Did some of them transfer to the 2nd division, or did it form mobilization structures of its own?

- Is there still distinction between operational, territorial and combined brigades and what is the difference? Does territorial mean reserve personnel, or des it mean not deployable overseas?

- Which battalions fall under the Comandamentul din Garnizoana Bucuresti and which Major-General is the garrison commander? The Chief of the land forces?

- So you have under the land forces the 1st, 2nd, 4th division, the training command, the Bucuresti Garrison, the SF, LAROM and Geniu brigades. Does the Comandamentul Logistic Întrunit also fall under the land forces or under the MApN and what is its structure? Which rank does the commanding officer have, what manpower and which units?

- How is the signals arm structured? I have read, that the former government signals arms of the Securitatea was transformed into an independent militarised service under government control. Is this service still operational, or has it been merged with the Comandamentul Comunicaţiilor şi Informaticii? Do the land forces, the air force and the navy have their own signals units, or are all the signals units part of that command?

- There is some scarce information, that the Romanian Military Police includes 4 MP battalions, but that's about it. I know there is the elite 265th MP Battalion under the land forces and an MP battalion under the guards regiment of the 1st division. What are the other two MP battalions, do they fall under the air force and navy respectively, or are the 4 battalions under direct MApN control? Are there any other MP units, such as MP companies, criminal investigation units, support centres etc? Are the Israely Wolf armoured cars part of the 265th MP Bn? For example our Bulgarian Military Police is a service under direct MoD control and it includes:
o 5 territorial MP districts, each commanded by a colonel
o Criminal Investigations Division
o operational MP company with 14 Plasan Sand Cat MRAV's
o Training and Logistical Center of the Military Police
In addition to these units according to our current transformation plan the armed forces are also forming:
o two land forces MP companies under each of the two mechanised brigades
o an air force MP company
o a naval MP company

- So the unconventional units of the land forces include the 3 battalions of the 6th Special Forces Brigade and a Batalionul Cercetare for each of the 3 divisions. Are there still parasutisti units in the divisions, at least parasutisti companies in some of the infantry battalions? The navy has the Scafandri frogmen center and the 307th Marines Battalion as a naval equivalent of the cercetare battalions of the army. Do the air force, the military police and the Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff have their own special forces?

- Do the Romanian land forces plan to acquire UAVs?

- The artillery includes the LAROM brigade under the Land Forces Staff and an artillery regiment for each of the three divisions. Or does the 2nd division lack an artillery formation? Does the Romanian army have operational self-propelled field artillery, how many units and which systems?

- About the land forces air defence - do the batalionul antiaeriana units of the army brigades include only ZU-23 and MANPADS, or do they also include self-propelled CA-95, Oerlikon guns? What is the structure of the air defence regiments of the divisions? They include Russian KUB and OSA SAM's and Gepard SPAAG's. How are the battalions structured? Do they also have Hawk XXI batteries, how many? Do they also include CA-95s, CA-94s, Oerlikon guns? Is there an air defence regiment under direct Land Forces Staff control, or only those 3 regiments?

- What is the structure of the ground based air defences of the Fortele Aeriene? I know that the Brigada 1 de Rachete Sol-Aer includes 4 batteries of S-75M3? Are these all the operational S-75s of Romania? Does the brigade also have Hawk XXI batteries? Is the Regimentul 11 de Rachete Sol-Aer "Horea" still operational? Is it independent, or is it part of the Brigada 1 RSA? What is its structure, does it also have S-75 or only Hawk XXIs?

- I have read that there are about 50 operational LanceRs. Is this info correct, because this is too few for 6 operational squadrons?

- What is the situation with the An-2, are they withdrawn? How many and which modification are the operational Yak-52s? Are the operational IAR-316B's only 6 and what happened to the plans to replace them with the EC-635? Do you still have Mi-8s or Aerospatiale Dauphins in the fleet?

- Is the information about 22 operational IAR-330 SOCAT and 35 operational IAR-330M accurate?

- Which is the unit, that operates the Shadow 600 UAVs out of Timisoara-Giarmata? Does it have an official name like for example Escadrila 38 de Recunoastere or is it just called Escadrila Shadow 600 and does it fall under an annex of a Baza Aeriana or is it under Air Force HQ?

- Is the whole naval aviation composed of only the three IAR-330 Naval, or does the navy still have some IAR-316B's?

- Is Romania manifacturing Eurocopter helicopters in Brasov? Which models and what quantities? Are the EC-135s of the SMURD manufactured there or in France?

- Could you tell me something more about the airborne troops command from the time of Ceausescu? I know that it included the Otopeni air transport base and airborne regiments. How many were the latter and were they combined in an airborne division, or was the division the airborne troops command itself? Did the command also have other aviation units?

- Was the command under air force and air defence jurisdiction, or did it fall under direct command of the ministry of defence? Did it have its own airborne artillery, airborne engineers, airborne signals units, airborne AT units, or was it strictly airborne infantry?

- What was the main task of these airborne troops? Warsaw Pact operations? Anti-Warsaw Pact operations? Internal security?

- During the Cold War the Romanian General Staff feared, that the navy could be easily blocked in its ports, so for that possibility the naval personnel was trained to act as infantry in a secondary role, shall that happen. Was the 55th Marine Brigade formed for that reason, or was it formed later in the 90s? Is it true, that at some moment in the 90s the navy had under its command a whole land forces corps, with its own mechanised brigades, tank regiment and air defense missile regiment and if yes, do the three mechanised brigades of the 2nd Division have anything to do with it?

Thank you so much for your time.

Very interesting, Vici, thank you for compiling and posting the data.

A few questions:

1. How many tanks are in a tank battalion? Does the 114 Tank Battalion/1st Infantry Division include (only) T 55, A version? What about the other tank battalions listed vith a combination of T 55 and T 55 AM?

2. It seems like 2nd Mountain Brigade/1st Infantry Division doesn't use MLVM (but has a support units of artillery - is that M-30M 122 mm a mountain gun?), and that both mountain brigades (the 2nd and the 61st) are devoid of mountain guns (Romanian 76 mm model 1982; but was there a latter model of Romanian 100 mm mountain howitzer also?). Is that correct?

3. The non-upgraded MLI 84 is not in active service anymore?

Thank you!

1. There are 56 tanks in a battalion. Apparently, the unit at Turda uses only T-55AM, the one at Murfatlar mostly A and a few AM, the 114 at Targoviste seems to have only A. This is based only on public photographic evidence, so it may be wrong.

2. I don't know if they use MLVM or not. Again, all I wrote is based on photographic evidence. M30M is the old WW2 Model 1938 Soviet howitzer, it's not a mountain gun.
According to UN data, 168 Model 1995 98mm mountain guns and 127 Model 1982 76 mm guns exist, but they are in storage; only the Marines use a small number of 76mm guns.

Mountain troops artillery (except for bat. 206) consists of dismounted 82 and 120 mm mortars and SPG-9 recoilless rifles - based on photos from the last decade.

3. The non upgraded MLI-84 is not in service. I have a hard time tracking even the upgraded ones - 99 were built for three battalions with 33 each, but it seems only two are using it: the 282 in Focsani and 300 in Galati

Thank you very much for your answer, Vici! A few observations:

1. Keeping in use the T 55 A (even for training puropses) is a very bad option, a measure of the lack of preocupation and competence of some decisional factors in the Romanian military. As far as I know, there still are ~30 Romanian T 72 in storage, plus a lot of T 72 on sales in the neighbouring countries (some even - as far as I know - being delivered as "military aid" for the new national armies of Iraq and Afghanistan). Not to mention the fact that, according to some informal sources, some AM for the tank units disbanded during 1990 - early 2000 were dismembered. A model like T 55 A could have been a wise choice in the '60s, but certainly not in a more recent timeframe. Also, from the information I have there are some couple of hundreds T 85 (the basic model) in reserve, why aren't some of them brought back into service?

2. The same argument concerning the two types of mountain guns. They could add some additional firepower to that units.

3. I was asking that because, in late 1990s, some non-upgraded MLIs could be seen in a infantry unit in Someseni, near Cluj. Also, I'm pretty sure that I've seen some (relatively recent) photos with infantry troops dismounting from a basic MLI - perhaps on the MApN site, or in some MApN-published magazine...

Edit: I was referring to this photo, but I cannot find the source: http://rumaniamilitary.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/20.jpg

Regarding ooB of RoA,have you seen this :

v

2. Serviciul de Lupta Poliţie Aeriană sub comandă naţională, prin rotaţie, cu câte un batalion de rachete sol-aer din compunerea brigăzii de rachete sol-aer se poate execută limitat, în condiţiile insuficienţei suportului logistic, lipsei carburantului special (oxidant) şi epuizării resursei tehnice a rachetelor;

4. celelalte servicii de lupta (supraveghere electronică, comunicaţii şi informatică, supraveghere CBRN, intervenţie EOD etc.) se execută cu limitări, determinate de starea echipamentelor, nivelul tehnologic al acestora, deficitele de dotare şi neasigurarea resurselor pentru mentenanţă şi reparaţii;

5. supravegherea spaţiului aerian şi avertizarea timpurie se asigura cu potenţial limitat, în condiţiile posibilităţilor reduse de menţinere a parametrilor de descoperire a radarelor FPS-117 şi TPS-79® fără alocarea bugetară necesară susţinerii contractelor de suport logistic prin NSpA (NATO Support Agency);

6. transportul aerian strategic se poate execută în limita a opt curse, acoperindu-se nevoile pentru teatrele de operaţii, conform documentelor şi înţelegerilor naţionale şi internaţionale;

8. nu se poate realiza capacitatea operaţională finală pentru detaşamentul de opt elicoptere de transport NATO, destinat asigurării contribuţiei la NRF 2016 (NATO Reaction Force);

capacitatea de asigurare a zborurilor speciale, umanitare şi pentru misiuni de intervenţie se va reduce semnificativ, din cauza insuficienţei alocaţiilor bugetare pentru susţinerea mentenantei şi suportului logistic a misiunilor, corespunzător standardelor de siguranţă aeronautică;

1. resursă de aviaţie pentru îndeplinirea planului de cooperare cu celelalte categorii de forţe ale armatei, inclusiv sprijinul forţelor de operaţii speciale;

1. apărarea aeriană cu aviaţia de vânătoare şi rachetele sol-aer se poate execută numai pe durata a 1-2 zile;

2. nu se asigura apărarea aeriană a aerodromurilor militare, acoperirea aeriană a dispozitivului operativ al forţelor terestre/forţelor navale, precum şi a obiectivelor strategice naţionale;

4. asigurarea forţelor pentru misiuni de intervenţie la criză teroristă (avioane şi elicoptere) şi pentru descurajare şi reacţie în sprijinul grupării de forţe de nivel brigada întărită/Forţe Terestre, se poate realiza din starea în care se află, în condiţii de disponibilitate limitată a elicopterelor şi nivel de antrenament redus a piloţilor/echipajelor;

PS We where tought in oficer school that a tank batalion has 18 tanks and a regiment 56,but ,probably things changed since then.

Agarici, I fully agree with what you wrote. Idiocy is a very prized "quality" for our Army leaders and politicians.

Yes, some T-55AM were scrapped, while some units still use T-55A, here an image of an AM in a scrapyard:
http://www.ziaruldevrancea.ro/actualitatea/77062-video-cimitirul-masinariilor-mortii-in-focsani.html

An article in the old Top Gun magazine from 1999 stated that there is a total of 315 TR-85 tanks available. With 56 upgraded to M1 Bison standard, another 56 non upgraded in service at Bacau, and 5 transformed into DMT-85M1, that leaves 198 tanks stored. That is, if they didn't scrap these too !!!

My guess is they don't use them because they are not reliable, the engine and transmission leaks and breaks all the time because of a few faulty gaskets and O-rings which could not be manufactured at the right specifications in country.
When they were built in the late 80's Ceausescu forbid any imports.

regarding that MLI-84 photo, I also have it on my computer, downloaded in 2008. I suppose it was taken a few years before that.

The vehicles stored at Cluj, are you sure they are MLI? I never heard of the type being deployed in Transilvania after 1989. They could also be MLVM?

I think your explanation about not using the basic TR 85s because they are mechanical unreliable is valid, but even so (and strangely enough) they do equip one unit. If not scrapped, there is at least a theoretical possibility to upgrade at least some of them in the folowing years to the M 1 standard. This however does not justify the stupidity/incompetence to scrap T 55 AM and to use the A model.

About the MLI’s from Someseni, I’m pretty sure they were there. They were in the streets of Cluj in December 1989, and were seen by me in 1996-1997, when I did my (then compulsory) military service in a nearby unit. I remember their ”big” (73 mm I think) gun, so I’d say they weren’t MLVMs; also, there were no mountain units in the area.

Off-topic question:
As far as I know, the T 55 AM in use with other armies (and the T 85 from the Military Museum in Buchaerst - please correct me if I’m wrong) has both added ”horse-shoe” armor and smoke-grenade launchers on the turret. But apparently neither models in use in the Romanian military (before and after 1989) does not spot them, and I’m referring to various photos with tanks during the Romanian Revolution, Targu-Mures 1990 and at maneuvers. Is there any reason for that, or different (sub)specifications in the models?

Posted by: Vici January 27, 2015 09:57 am
I don't understand your question about the AM.

Romania ordered in 1969 and imported 850 T-55A and K(command version of the A) between 1970-1977 from the USSR
In 1984 we acquired from the USSR the license to upgrade to AM standard.
The upgrade was done on some - not all - of the tanks between 1985-89.

It is unknown how many upgrade examples were contracted, and how many were done.

All the T-55s which were upgraded to AM standard have the horseshoe armor (Brezhnev's eyebrows) and the smoke grenades launcher. What is different between them is the FCS. Some have the Volna FCS and a Soviet laser rangefinder - like the one in the Military Museum in Bucharest, and those used by the 814 battalion at Campia Turzii. See:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.730520666985533.1073742027.418420948195508&type=3
Some had the Kladivo FCS from Czechoslovakia - like the ones scrapped in the link I provided above.
And some had the Romanian made Ciclop FCS with a wind sensor. The tanks from the now disbanded regiment at Botosani had that - search cartula.ro for photos.

Vici, I was asking that because in the photos from 1989-1990 I saw, the T 55 AM's din not spot those smoke grenade launchers (the same thing for the basic TR, even in recent photos), and I was wondering if any of the two models still have the old smoke-making system by injecting oil in the combustion chamber of the engine.

As for the horse-shoe armor, were they designed for the un-upgraded TR, or only for the M 1 version? If I'm right, the TR from the NMM has that added side and frontal armor, but I haven't seen it on any other basic TR. Thank you!

Posted by: Vici February 05, 2015 09:02 am
The basic TR-85 never had smoke grenade launchers, nor additional turret armor. The only ones that have them are the 56 upgraded TR-85M1 Bison and the TR-85M prototype at the museum. Add-on turret armor is different between the prototype M and the serial production upgrade M1.

Don't know if they have the oil injection smoke system.
