This is a real challenge to my statement.

Why do you see this as a "challenge"?
I thought we were just having a chat, not a contest.

That meant that the example offered by Antoni clearly proved that my statement is wrong, while your previous replies to me were only ... dry.gif

Come guys, chill ! Lets get back to discussing the main topic JU88............
Interesting question by Cantacuzino, is that the same aircraft in the two photos ? Is the no.1 on the fin unique to that one aircraft ?

Just spotted this interesting video, anyone else seen it ?

But I was not trying to "prove you wrong". And if you were "proven wrong", it is your own doing. You put yourself in that situation, just get over it, don't make it an even bigger thing that it is.
Just relax, we are here to discuss things.

We need clearer pictures to compare the camouflages. But at first glance they look quite similar, so it is a strong possibility they are one and the same.

The video is a compilation of newsreel footages and is relatively well-known. 22 years ago a VHS tape with all those films was available from hobby shop in the foyer of the Military Museum in Bucharest, at least that was the first time I came across them. I may still have the tape somewhere...

For ARR planes was a common practice that numbers ( 1, 2 3 4...)were given only to one plane in squadron and if one plane was lost in battle a new one replace it with the same number and a suffix added .
ex:
"1a" ( after no " 1" lost),
"1b "( after no "1a" lost) etc

In our case it should be only one Ju 88 no "1".

That is very interesting. It helps identify other older photos while in the Romanian Air Force service knowing it is the same aircraft.

While on the subject of 'defection' , does anyone know of other defections, dates and where and why, involving Romanian Air Force aircraft ? I know of at least one more to Cyprus, I think in 1944.

Before the defection of the lone Romanian pilot in July 1943, a whole German crew of 3 people (with only 2 of them really wanting this) defected with a Ju-88 to Great Britain, in May 1943.
Even though most of the people writing here may know this fact, it does not hurt to remind it ...

So true Florin. And this example is in the RAF museum in London, where I regularly visit. A fantastic museum which I recommend. Hope to visit in the next couple of weeks. I'll post some updated photos of it. Curious to know still about another(s) defection involving Romanian aircraft to Cyprus. I saw a reference on another very old thread here, about a He111 and prince something or other defecting to Cyprus, but that didn't entirely sound right.

That was a Heinkel He 111H-6 bomber that flew to Cyprus on 17 June 1944, with several wealthy businessmen aboard.

Hi Denes. It was a posting by you mention the above , plus there was a Prince Ghica mentioned (I don't know the history of Prince Ghica I'm a afraid so someone will have to explain).
However, because I never heard this story about a He111 at Nicosia, BUT, I do have photos of a Romanian SM79JR at Nicosia, supposedly from a defection. Could it be the same incident, but the aircraft mentioned is wrong ? The He111 is actually an SM79JR ?

No, the aircraft I mentioned was a He 111, as given by Rumanian documents.
The S.79 must have been another defection.

There was a Savoia that went to Turkey in August 1944 with Mircea Grosu Viziru (director of I.A.R. Brasov) and his family on board.
