I read in some different sources that Generalfeldmarschall was awarded by Romany during WW : - Rumän. Orden “Michael der Tapfere” III Klasse: 12.07.1944 - Rumän. Orden “Michael der Tapfere” II Klasse: 12.07.1944 Does anyone know why and when exactly ? What does such medal represented ? The date given here is just before he's heavily wounded in Normandy by Allied Spitfires (17.07.1944). Thanks a lot for your help, CM |

The Michael the Brave Order was/is the highest military order of the Romanian State. Rommel received it as a political gesture most likely (just like Goering, for example). I could not find the motivation in the decree awarding it. |

Rommel "visited" Romania in World War One… Back then he was lieutenant in the elite Brandenburg regiment, and his responsibilities were higher than his lieutenant grade. |

In WW1 there was no elite Brandenburg RGT. The ZBV800 RGT was only a WW2 unit. |

OK, "Alexei2012", I believe you. I have to check what was the name of the regiment where Rommel was lieutenant in World War One in Romania. I was too lazy to check it in the moment I wrote those words. |

The unit was Württemberg Mountain Battalion ("Königlich Württembergisches Gebirgsbataillon") of the Alpenkorps. |

Yep! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Rommel#World_War_I No "Brandenburg Regiment"... they weren't "invented" until WW2, and not even under that name at the beginning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandenburgers PPS: sorry about the wikipedia quotes, but they were the first available thing. |
