I'll start first with Ioan Dicezare.
In 1937 at Brasov IDC had a plane accident.
The other guy died and he was wonded at the spine.
During the war he had a belly landing and hurt his back again.
A verteb was broken and the pain was to hight to fly.
He was sent to Wiena but was convinced not to go since bombing started there.
He was operated in Bucharest and the doctor took a part of his rib and placed it between te vertrebs.
He laid on his face tor a few weeks untill he could walk again.
After a few months he returned to combat duty.
The operation was so succesful that you can hardly see the scars.

He was one lucky guy, at least on this occasion.

Today I wanted to write about Sorin Tulea.
But I'd like to write about the dental problems of WC (Winston Churchil).
I have as a guest a dentist from Geneva.
He's 77 and an extraordinary person.
He worked years in the university of Chicago and 6 years in Monaco.
I heard unbelivable stories about people we know from history books moovies and tv.
Sometines in the late 50's,Dr Paul Finemann (that is his name) got a phone in his office from his boss.
He was asked to take some tools (needed for an extraction ) and to go to a nearby hotel...
Dr Finemann had been working on a patient...
He was told not to ask questions and to leave everything and to go to th e hotel.
The distance was about 300 m.At the enterence a person waited and took him to the 4-th floor-room 403.
After entering he saw his boss standing on one side of the room, and on a chair on the other said...a hand with a cigar.
The problem was that the lower molar that needed to be extract broke and it took Finemann about an hour to extract the roots.
After that WC made an alveolitis (post extraction infection).
Dr F had to go daily to the hotel and put some drugs intothe alveola.
Each time WC used to tell him that dentistry in the worst thing in the world, and that dentists are for him the most hateful people and so on...
At the last meeting, when Dr F understood that this going to be the last time they meet,he asked WC,why he hates so much dentists?
He found himself with a glass of cognac in his had and WC pointed at a chair nearby and said;"young man,sit there..!"
And for an hour he told Dr F,about his dental troubles.
They first started while he was an pow at the Burs war in S Africa. He had a sever pain, and some other pow, tryied to extract the teath with some mechanical tool...
The tooth broke and the pain was unimaginable...
Another interesting chapter was when he was in the US and was suposed to make a speach in front the senat broadcasted in direct by radio.A few hours before,he's uper prothesis got broken.
he speach was delayed to the next day,but the prot.was not repaired too well and WC spoke with dific.
The day after all newspapers wrote that it was a faik ,since that wasn't WC's voice...
About the payment,I wont write....

Another medical story of a participant of ww2.
In 1992,Dr Paul Finemann, got a strange phone call...
An asian came an showed him some x ray.Heard an opinion and left.
After a few weeks he came again with some other x ray (belonging to te same person).
After another few weeks the person came again and asked if DR PF would travel to treat a pacient in North Korea.
After they sattled some problems, they (Dr PF,his wife and a dental tehnician) got a one way ticket to Moscow.Only that they had no visa for the USSR.
At the Zurich airport the Aeroflot personal, wouldn't let them into the plane without a visa.
After a phone call to the NK embassy this problem was solved.
In Moscow they were sent to Omsk and from there to Yrkutzk.
There they waited 8 hours before embarked into a plane who landed in Pheniang.
There 3 limo took them to a big house.
After eating they went again with the black limos to the railwaystatio. The cars entered the railwaystation till 2-3 m from a train.
They traveled a few hours, and every time they passed people, those imediatly were turning their back to the train...
At the end they drove for a few hours in the mountains till a big building.
There they got rooms and finaly they understood who was the pacient;the great lider Kim Il Sung.
The first examination took place in presence of about 30 people (doctors, translators and a lot of body guards). When Dr F examined KIS on the dental chair, everything was ok,but when he asked him to stand and tuched him,a bodyguard ,had throwed him to the flor...
After some chekings,Dr F sugested a treatment (KIS was treated not long ago by a JapaneaseDr..)
None of KIS doctors agreed, and the meeting was delayed till the next day.
Dr F's wife then had an idea..she entered the house library and found a book writed by KIS and had a photo of him on the first page.
They found one from the time he was young.
The next day when the arguments with the local doctors continued,DR F took out the book, showed it to KIS and asked him,how old was he when that photo was taken?
KIS didn't remember if he was 36 or 37.
Then Dr F told him "Other this photo is a faik or it's not you on the large photos on the streets..(those who visited Comunist countries, know what I'm talking about).
The ideea was that the Japanease dentist changed KIS fizionomy, and his problems could be solved only by rebuilding his dental status the way he was before the treatments.
The local dentist did not agreed and dr F asked to be given the pasports and money back (they were taken while boarding the plane).
After this they finaly agreed and the treatment started.
KIS was a good pacient,he folowed the treatment with a hand miror but out of curiosity. He never complined about anything.
When the treatment was finished,dr F asked KIS ,if he can be chaked olso the folowing day,and KIS stayed one more day.
On the departure day,KIS thanked the whole Swisse crew, and said:"I know that you love very much the nature,I'm not letting you leave this country unless you visit the X? valley!"
To be cont. ....

Posted by: C-2 October 25, 2005 06:49 pm
So,they went by limo. to a beautiful valley .A suprise was when all three got each a pair of mountain shoes, exactly the nr and model they used in Switzerland, and also windcoats...
At the visit they saw pieces of gold everywhere. When they asked the park keaper ,why it is not exploited, the unswer was;"Why should we diestroy the country for some $?..."
After the visit they drove to another direction. They stopped at a big tent, where they were served with dinner.
The presidential helicopter came, together with their laugage and they were flowen to Phenyang.
THere they wanted to do some shoping of suvenirs....
They were taken to a very large mall.
But no costomers were inside...
When mrs. Finemann asked for a price of a certain object, she was told that nothing is for sale, but she can take all she wants...
Before leaving for Peking, they got a lot of presents and were asked not to open anything till home.
A certain very large box was kept always close.
The Chinese costom officers asked what is in the box,and took off the paper that covered it.When they saw what was written on the box, they went off .
The problems apeared at Zurich airport.
The Box was x raid and many costom officers came and asked how much the contain of the box costs...? Dr F said he doesn't know.
Then they asked him to open it.Inside there was a enorm silk carpet with a dog that can be seen on each side.
When asked how much wolud he like to get for it,Dr F answered:"It's a present from Kin Il Sun,and I don't belive someone would like to buy it".
He has the carpet at his house.
There were also roblems with some bottles with special drinks with dead snakes inside...
But the problems just started.
One day Dr F got a phone from the state police,he was asked on the meeting that took place ,many details about Kim Il Sun.Specialy about his residence place.
Only that it was imposible to tell ,since they couldn't tell anythinmg exept it was in the North....
For two years Dr F was terorized by dif. secret services about his "conections" of N.Korean demnitaries...
In 1994 KIS died.
I asked Dr F about the work he did on KIS,and the only thing he told me was that "My work will hold for a long long time..."(Kim Il Sun was mumified...).

After been taken prisoner Nicolae Traian, was sent to a pow camp.
There were very few oficers and the soldiers were Romanian and Italians.
An Tifus an Holera epidemics started and since the few doctors that were in the camp had no drugs, almost all cases were leathal.
NT got them bouth,Holera and Tifus.
He went to the Romanian doctor and asked for help. The doctor, who couldn't provide any medical treatment but since NT was the only Rom. oficer he examined him and told him :"Do not tuch the soup anymore, drink only the tea.."
It had no medical justification this advice, but after a few weeks,NT was totaly healed.
He was only about 35 kg,and went to thanks the doctor for saving his life.
The dr couldn't belive his eyes.He explained that the only think he could provihe was hope. He added that it's the first case he knew of someone who is alive after getting bouth Holera and Tifus.
Since then NT never got ill again. Not even a flew...

Does he still avoid the soup, and drink only tea?

Very nice thread, by the way. Thanks.

Posted by: Victor October 27, 2005 12:37 pm
IIRC, the doctor also told Nicolae traian to eat only toast, abesides drinking just tea.

Nicolae Traian (who is almost 90 and looks like 50) avoids eating conserved food.
No smoking and very little alcohol.
But I belive that the most important are the GENES!

A very interesting story is the one about Costin Georgescu.
I won't write it,since it is on the site.

Today a story about a Stuka pilot named Aldea.
The story I heard from Mihai Belcin together with Victor and I also taped it on video (so I won't be called a liar by an inteligent members of this forum).

On a bombing mission ,a bullet passed from one side of the cockpit to the other ,and in the way he took off a part of Aldea's beard, soft tissue, teaths and mandibular bone.
Despite the wound ,he landed safely on the home airfield.
He was sent to Wiena and when Belcin met him in 1948 he was totaly repaired and scars could hardly be seen.
The lost of mandibular bone was sollved with a piece of metal (Platinum..) the soft tisseus were the biggest problem they had to be taken from Aldea's arm (a complicated operation for those days). And later the tooth replased with a dental prothesis.
Since some men had hairy hands and Aldea was one of them,he had also some hair of his face....

A sort of a funny story happened to Belcin a few days after the incident.
Aldea's Stuka had a lot of coagulated blood inside and no pilot wanted to fly it .
No one wanted to clean it aither...
After a while the comandant (Galeno?) asked Belcin (who was older then the other pilots) to take it on a bombing mission, since he had no spare planes.
Belcin accepted, but when he went into a dive, the beard, mandibula and other parts of Aldea, came before his eyes on the windscreen.
"A very unplesant situation" as Belcin describes...
After the mission he burried it at the end of the airfield.

Ion Marinciu today.
He was wonded twice.
Once while flying a mission over Basarabia, suddenly from 12O'clock a P 39 came with hight speed.Marinciu imediatly fired bouth canon and mg's.It was only a fraction of a sec, since each plane had about 500km/h.
After a few min,Mariciu felt a burn acros his left leg.
Boold was runing from the wound but not much.
After landing he found that a single projectil of the 37 mm nose canon penetrated the eangine cover passed under the instrumental panel scrached Marinciu's leg,and went out somewhere at the end of the plane.
You can imagine me asking Marinciu to take his pents down, and to show me the scar.
He was kind and did...
The second and more serious wound hopefully tomorrow.

Posted by: C-2 November 04, 2005 08:42 pm
The second time Ioan Marinciu was wounded was more serious and he spent a few weeks in hospital.
In Dec 44 in a Stuka protection ,he enter a dog fight with what Denes found out that were Hungarian 109's.His plane's tail was hit and he was able to fly only straight.
Bullets hit his instruments and Marinciu was hit by pieces of glass. His nose was almost cut.
After a belly landing,he was "collected"by a Soviet truck and emerged to a nearby hospital. There anestesia was not avilable. The same problem was with the second hospital. Here there was no choise then to be "repaired" only with Russian anestezia (vodka).
The surgeon took put one by one the glass fragments first from his nose and face, then from the arms.
After that he got a hught bandage over his face, and got a bed in the same room with a Soviet tankist.
After a day or two,Bazu came to visit him.He was so glad that Marinciu was allright, that he wanted to kiss him.Only that because of the bandages he didn't find a place...
It took the wounds a few weeks to heal ,and Marinciu nose still looks "strange" after all those years...

Chera Dumitru told me the following story a few years ago during a short meeting.
Acording to him, after a flying incident,he chrashed not far from Bucharest near a railroad.
Some peasants took him out of the plane and a local doctor? declared him dead.
No pulse....
He was left during the night in a local church in order to be burried the next day.
When a priest entered the church the next day,he went outside and shouted in fear:"the pilot is alive! the pilot is alive! he's mooving and talking...".
The ideea is that by the end of the day ,Chera Dumitru was back with his unit after a stop by the military hospital, where he was declared "very much alive".

I noticed that.
Maybee the fhoto was for propaganda, and the choosed a plane big enought for bouth to get under it.

An uncle of my father, was a gunner in ww1.
Since ear protection didn't actualy exist (exept of the introducing of the fingers into the eays-when availabel...) the uncle recived some hearing problems.
While demobilized,he visited a military doctor ,who gave him a bottle with a sirop.
He told him to take each morning one spoon of that sirop.
On the way from Buc to Suceava, the uncle took the first spoon. He liked the taste and n a few min. he drank the entire bootle...
Not to mention that imediatly he became totaly deafh, and he stayed that way till he died
late 40's.

I DON'T BELIVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this a movie ?
I had a teacher ,who died about 14 years ago-Oswald Schtadler was his name.
I already wrote about it.
Before the war he worked for a maritim company in Constanta. In a restaurant he met a Japaneese guy ,who was a young artist (painter and sculpture). They became frainds and you several years the corespondate.
After the war began, they lost all contact.
Oswald SChtadler was originar from Chisinev or Chernowitz. While the Soviets took Basarabia and Bucovina ,they sent him to Siberia for serving the regular army service in the Romanian army.
After some years there,he went as a volunteer to fight the Germans.
He participated at the fights at Kiev(????) and was among very few from his company who survived.
After the war ended,he was sent back to Siberia.THere at at pow camp he met his Japaneese friend. They were together for a short period.
After many years (in the late 70's) they made contact again.
The artist was a well known one (I saw some of his works at my teacher's house).
He invited him to Japan, but unfortunatly,OS had problems with his feets after having frost bites in Siberia and wasn't able to go.
He died at early 90's.
I miss him very much!!!
IS THAT A COINCIDENCE OR WHAT?????
I belive his wife is still alive. She was much younger and is a doctor.
He also has a son that must be aroung 50.

A medical story told by Oswald Schtadler;
While reving in the Soviet army, suddenly all his batalion bot hepatitis and became yellow...
The army doctor,an old guy who served in the Tzar's army before the revolution, gave them to eat to two weeks only apples and honey.
All of them recovered very well, and were back to duty.

Posted by: C-2 December 07, 2005 08:16 pm
90 years old ,Stuka pilot,Mihai Belcin told me about his hepatitis;
He was interned in a German military hospital.
There the german soldiers use to make flea races...
Each soldier would stick his hand under his shirt and pick up a flea.
The flea was put on a table and his jump measured.
A lot of money was played.

Two questions, unrelated to each other:

1. The setting of the improvised campaign hospital seems familiar, as if maybe I have seen other military photos with the same surroundings. Do you know where the photo was taken?

2. Who's getting married? Whoever it is, congratulations!

Posted by: C-2 December 08, 2005 04:12 pm
1.Odessa
2.Dan said he's already married...
I didn't know he is,so I guess he got married withiut telling anyone....
