| Queen Marie Medal. I have a large neck medal in silver which was awarded by Queen Marie for nurses during WW1 for exceptional bravery at the front lines. Recently came across this breast medal. What was this awarded for ? http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=969d1sblxu3.jpg |

| I have also this medal but the gilded version. This isn't an official medal, i think that it is more a medal awarded by a Red Cross society. |

Queen Marie had a series of medals made for WW1 civilian nurses who served on the front or with the military. I beleive this medal is for such purpose. You having a gold gilt version and now finding one in silver indicates First and Second class medals. A Red Cross society medal normally would reference the Red Cross insignia. I beleive that this medal was given for distinction thus the bar on the bottom for engraving a recipients name. |

Hallo Gents, Nice looking Medal, when you say awarded for Front-line Service, do you mean civil Red Cross personnel would have been in the forward trenches? In all other theaters of war, Red Cross and Military Nurses were seldom if ever in what was known as the actual front line, on occasion the Aid stations to the rear were under enemy artillery barrage, or on some occasions even over-ran by advancing enemy troops. Medical Stretcher bearers were in all cases always serving military personnel. Kevin in Deva |

| It could be also a project !!! I have somewehre a picture from the Military Museum with items that have belonged to Queen Mary ! I remember that I saw there a medal allmoust similar to this. The difference was an enameled red cross between the ribbon ring and medal.Maybe I will find the picture. |
