Hello,

I'm looking for the name of Divizia 21 Infanterie commander in Bessarabia in late June or early July 1940. Some biographical data would be fine, too.
According to some sources, this general was relieved from his command because of poor leadership during the retreat into Moldavia.

Thank you for any help provided.
Regards from France,
Skarn

Some information led me to think that this general officer could have been general de brigada Sotir Dimitru or Dimitriu.

Has anyone something about what he did during the bessarabian annexation in June and July 1940?

There was a cavalry colonel Gheorghe Sotir, but it is highly unlikely that this is the same person.

Information regarding the OoB of 1940 is scarce, as all major military history books concentrate on the 1941-1945 period. There is no major work on the retreat from Bessarabia. Most of the available literature concentrates on the testimonies and events during the retreat, but there is no overall picture painted with what troops were deployed, who commanded and so on.

Apparently, general Sotir Dumitriu was Divizia 21 Infanterie CO until October 5th, 1939. He was then sent to reserve status.
It should have been his successor that performed poorly in June-July 1940, during the retreat from Bessarabia. A colonel Correcu could have took his place during the process, until general Christache Popescu took official command of the division on July 31st, 1940.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Multumesc!
