You are mistaking here. Only 6 Romanians were awarded the Commander class of the Virtutea Aeronautica Order and he wasn't one of them. He only received the Virtutea Aeronautica Order Gold Cross class with two bars.

Well ,that's what Mr.Lucaci said..
But he wasn't sure.
He said "parca asa se cheama?"
I belive it didn't matter to him at all what kind of "Virtute" he recived!

Lucaci MIhai has a very long nose...
Ones he had some eangine problems with a 109 and made a landing on a corn field.
He was arested by jandarms who were sure he was an American...
He asked them to call the flotila.
There the oficer in charge asked "has the pilot a very large nose?"
-Yes he does,answer the jandarm.
- Ok ,then it's our pilot, said the oficer.

A caricature with Gavriliu and Lucaci in the back,on a rusty motorcycle,on the way to the airfield.

Posted by: C-2 January 26, 2006 12:56 pm
Today I heard from Dobran the story of the motorcycle.
It belonged to the brother if Chitu gavriliu-Traian Gavriliu, who was a IAR 80 pilot and fought in Stalingrad.
The bike was a big and powerful one.
Very hard to handle.
After a while it was sold to a guy from Sibiu who was so grateful that he came after a week an gave them a lot of goods.

At the flying school.
Do you recognize another familiar face there? smile.gif

Posted by: Dénes January 26, 2006 11:26 pm
Well, beside Lucaci, I recognize Ion Dobran, Horia Pop and Liviu Muresan.

A better quality photo, or a scan, would help tremendously.

Lucaci Mihai had as an instructor ,a strange guy named Ciontu.
Ciunto, during trainings ,use to hold the stick with bouth hands and never let the student to fly.
This behavior made the young guys very angry.
Once during a landing,Lucaci was waving with bouth hands to the guys on the ground.
After landing some other instructor told Ciontu about Lucaci.Ciontu spanked him twice as puniscment...
The very next day Ciontu made a fool of himself by the "landing "above.

Mamaia airfield summer 1943,52 squad.
Upper row,from left:Brancoveanu,slt rez Jemna,cpt Ghica,Enciou.
Second row:Adj Grigore,Lucaci,cpt Lainek,Simion.
Third row: Adj ?,Zamfirescu,Maga,adj?.

That's lt. av. Baron Radu Reinek, not cpt. Lainek.
The two ? on the third row are: serg. TR av. Radu Costace and adj. av. Vladimir Bodnar.

The photo could not have been taken in the summer of 1943, because both Ghica and Maga were assigned to different squadrons by that time.

He must have been Slt. av. Ion M. Iliescu of Esc. 57 vân., KIFA aboard his I.A.R. 80 on June 4, 1942 at Pipera airfield. [JurnOp. Flot. 1 vân. mentions the date of his decease as June 5].

The surender of Mamaia airfield to the Soviets.
From left: Bazu,cpt. Micu,Lucaci,Fotescu.
They were suprised to see aSoviet general so modest dressed and so "simple".

This photo was taken on the so-called 'Western Front', at Gr. 9 vân., in early 1945, perhaps February. Even the name of this Soviet General is known (something with S, like Semionov?).

Mamaia was overtaken by the Soviets in early September 1944 (now snow).

Posted by: C-2 February 01, 2006 06:31 pm
Yes ,ther's something like Semionov writen on the back.
I'm just writing what is writen on the back.

I haven't either.

Is there a date written on the print's verso?

P.S. Lucaci is the 5th person from the right (incl. the half-obscured airman), while the first one at the left is 'Bâzu' Cantacuzino (it's nice to see him in 'dreptzi' position, for a change). biggrin.gif

Bazu is behind the soviet.
Lucaci is the second from left ,in front of the general.

Locotenent means 1st Lt.
On the above photo he is still a Sublocotenent, i.e., 2nd Lt.
