Posted by: Carol I February 28, 2005 08:25 pm |
http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=1736 gave me the idea of this new topic: Monuments that no longer exist. The idea is to post here photos of old monuments which existed in the pre-WWII cities of Romania and which were removed/destroyed during the war or when the change in regime/administration took place. It would be interesting to have some information about the authors of the statues, their original locations and the eventual faith of these monuments. I am referring only to monuments as statuary groups. Other monuments such as buildings (architectural monuments) should be included in a separate topic. |

The monument of Reunited Romania made by Olga Sturza (27 September 1884 - 10 July 1971) and donated to the city of Iaşi on 1 August 1924. It was placed at the foot of Copou hill and inaugurated on 29 May 1927. Shortly after the Soviet troops entered Iaşi in 1944 the monument was hammered beyond recognition. The remains were eventually demolished in 1947.![]() Source: Romanian Coins At the initiative of the municipality of Iaşi, a similar monument was made by Constantin Crenganiş in the late 1990s and was inaugurated on 1 December 1999 in the Nation’s Square in front of the University of Medicine. |

The statue of Gheorghe Gh. Mârzescu (1876-1926) in Iaşi, inaugurated on 27 September 1936 in the Cuza Vodă Square (nowadays 14 December 1989 Square). Member of the National Liberal Party, Mârzescu was considered responsible for actions against both the legionaries and the communists in the 1920s. It may therefore be possible that his statue was dismantled as early as the autumn of 1940, during the legionary rule. Source: Realitatea Ilustrată |

Dismantled by the Hungarian authorities in 1940, the pieces were transferred to Beiuş where they degraded in time. I don't know if non-Rumanian monuments erected on the current territory of Rumania qualify for this thread. Anyhow, I post one such statue and if there is interest, I can post some more. The statue of Lajos Kossuth, prominent Hungarian leader of the 1848/1848 Revolution, was erected in what is currently Tg. Mures (back then, it was known as Marosvásárhely, in Hungarian, or Neumarkt, in German), on May 23, 1899. Kossuth was the first citizen of honour of the city. The statue was demolished by the new Rumanian authorities on March 28, 1919. In the same location a Rumanian Orthodox church has been erected. The bronze scrap material was used to cast several eagles adorning various Rumanian monuments. Gen. Dénes |

What do you mean by non-Romanian monuments? Made by a non-Romanian artist? The Bucharest statue of king Carol I would then qualify as a non-Romanian monument being made by the Croat Ivan Mestrovic. Still its place is on this thread as being a monument which existed in one pre-WWII city of Romania. So, welcome to the topic. |

No, Carol. What I meant is monuments that show non-Rumanian topic/figures, erected by non-Rumanians, but on the territory of today's Rumania, which were destroyed/demolished. The artists' nationality is irrelevant. I posted an example above. If there is interest, I can post some more. Gen. Dénes |
Posted by: Carol I March 10, 2005 06:52 pm | ||
Dénes, I understand what you meant, but it is highly irrelevant from my point of view. Monuments are sometimes described as "urban furniture" (yes, like benches and light posts, the difference being the touch of an artist). Therefore their "nationality" is meaningless because they belong to the city in which they are. As such, all monuments which existed in the pre-WWII cities and towns of Romania (not only nowadays Romania) were as Romanian as the city to which they belonged. I cannot understand your point of taking something out of the ordinary. Anyhow, we could continue like that for ages, but the discussion on the "nationality" of monuments is both meaningless/irrelevant and off-topic. I will therefore stop here and wish you again "welcome on this topic". P.S. As you probably know, sometimes a monument can be removed without the violence implied by "destroyed/demolished". |

The Lupa Capitolina statue in Chişinău. In the 1920s the Italian State donated copies of the original statue in Rome that were placed in several Romanian cities to symbolise the Latin origin of the Romanian people and the unity of the country. The monument in Chişinău was inaugurated in 1923 in front of the building that in 1918 housed the Council of the Land (Sfatul Ţării) which decided the union of Bessarabia with Romania. The monument was destroyed after the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia in the summer of 1940.![]() Source: Romanian Coins It took 50 years until a similar monument appeared in Chişinău. On 1 December 1990, as a result of the actions for emancipation and independence of the people in Bessarabia, a new Lupa Capitolina monument was unveiled on the same spot in front of the old Sfatul Ţării building (nowadays the National History Museum of the Republic of Moldavia). The monument, a donation of the Romanian Orthodox Church, is a copy of the statue in Bucharest donated to the Romanian state in 1906. ![]() Source: http://www.monument.md/sculptura/compozitii_monumentale/58/ |

I heard (unnoficially) from ome historians that this statue was destroyed nou in 1940, but in 1944. In 1940 was used to chain the "antibolshevik" Romanians. Some people said that it is a project to be rebuilded near Atachi, where it was. |
