Hello everyone, and happy new year. I'm trying to find out more about my grand-grand-father who fought in the Second World War. I'm going to give you some infos that I know now, and I'll update them on Sunday when I get some more info.
Cerchez Ioan, Sergeant or Sergeant Major, fought with the 7th Vanatori de munte (I don't know whether it's Regiment or Batallion) he was in the Eastern Front(Caucaz etc). He was decorated but I don't exactly know with what ( I'll probably find out Sunday). His brother Cerchez Gheorghe also fought in the Eastern Front and was caught by the Russians when Romania changed sides, and he died in a russian prison, location unknown. This is all the info I know for now, I'll find out more Sunday and I'll update my post. |

It was the 7th Mountain Battalion. This book contains the memoirs of an officer of this battalion and depicts most of the fighting carried out by the unit throughout the war:

UPDATE:
Sergeant Major Cerchez Ioan (b 31/07/1911 Bacau, d 16/01/1993 Bacau) Fought from 22/06/1941-02/10/1943 and 09/44- 11/44 (17th Vanatori de Munte) 2 decorations : Barbatie si credinta cu spade clasa a 3-a x2, both in '42 This post has been edited by stolennn1 on January 20, 2014 04:53 pm |

It was 7th Battalion or 17th? Because 17th Battalion was part of 9th Mountain Group, 4th Mountain Division. |
