Hallmarks of Kretly and Lemaitre| Cuza |

The French court jewelers of A. Kretly and G. Lemaitre both
manufactured early Romanian orders. Does anyone know what marks were identified with these jewelers? |

On the back of the stars made by Krètly I have seen the following text in an oval mark:
Nº46 KRÈTLY PALAIS-ROYAL PARIS |

That is their original place of manufacture. I was hoping to find out if they have a "letter" or "symbol" type of mark. Thanks for the information. |

I have seen one Krètly badge, but I did not notice any hallmark. |

I know that G. Lemaitre of Paris was a manufacturer of Romanian orders during the reign of King Ferdinand. Did he manufacture early Romanian orders as well?

According to Jacob Court Jewelers of the World, Lemaitre was founded in 1843 and made insignia for many countries until it was taken over by Bertrand in 1927. I believe that there were earlier Carol I era pieces, some of which were smaller in size than normal. No authority for this belief, just personal observation and opinion. |

I asked a collector who has seen many orders about the hallmarks. He said that, apart from the text on the back of the stars mentioned by CarolI, the only other hallmarks that he noticed on these French-made orders are the French hallmarks for silver. One of them is a "Minerva" head.

Hallmarks on crown set. They are almost impossible to read-I scanned them at 1200 dpi and tried to adjust contrast and light to highlight. Maybe someone with French hallmark knowledge can help. My best guess is Lemaitre, but the marks could be Bertrand or Kretly.

The star appears to have the central crown quite similar to that of an Officer's cross that has been on eBay sometime ago.  Originally posted in Fake Grand Cross Order of the Crown? |

The one to the left might be the mark of the Paris Assay Office (a boar head according to Basic Hallmark Identification). |
