Boonicootza has posted the images of a medal similar to the one on the left in your photos.

A school prize from the 1899/1900 school year (from okazii). Great motto: "Lumineaza-te si vei fi".

Here's the same medal in different metal (I guess is silver).

An article published in BSNR no. 129-130 ("Invatamantul oglindit in medalistica romaneasca" de Eugen F. Teodoreanu, Virgil Z. Teodorescu) lists 55 different types of school prizes awarded between 1811 and 1941 by the state and various schools.

The oldest one is a silver medal awarded in 1811, with the text: "Acordata de scoala greceasca din Bucuresti pentru virtute si studiu."

Some of the school medals are extremely rare, since were awarded in limited numbers. For example, only 146 Medals of Reward for Labour in Primary Schools (Rasplata Muncii pentru Invatamantul Primar) of all classes were awarded. That makes these medals rarer than a Michael the Brave order, for example.

A medal in my collection from the V. Negrut school of gymnastics and shooting. There is an accent under the "t" but I can not type that in.

This medal is listed in Groner ("Rumanische Medaillen, 1600 - 1900") but without any date attribution, so that would mean it is from 1900 or earlier.
I can find no reference to it in Buzdugan & Niculita ("Medalii si plachete romanesti")

Can anyone enlighten me regarding "V. Negrut"? Was this a person, or maybe a location?

Any comments on the ribbon? It looks to have been on the medal for some time, but then in excess of 100 years is ample time for a previous owner to attach an unrelated ribbon they had lying around.

Is there no Forum member with any thoughts on "V. Negrut" at all?

No fellow collector with any comments on the ribbon either?

A school medal, 2nd Prize, from Mihai I first reign, from my collection.

The "ribbon" that is on the medal is interesting. It has obviously been with the medal for quite some time. The exterior is faded but inside the folded part is golden yellow in colour. Here is a close up view of the material.

Is it possible that this "ribbon" is some form of military rank braid. Perhaps the child's father was in the army? Opinions from Forum members would be appreciated.
