It hard to imagine these pictures were taken way before the big battles on the eastern front, before Stalingrad, the summer and winter campagins,..the Ploiesti Bombings and hard airbattles, and the bombing of Bucharest itself.
The color makes you think these pictures were taken yesterday..

Here are some more pictures from the same set, in Bulgaria.
These pictures were taken shortly after those taken in Bucharest.

Villagers from a Bulgarian village offer a German motorcylist a drink of Kefir.
Kefir is a thick sour milk that is very healthy and originates from the caucasus and apparently makes peoples live up to 120 years of age or so)
(i got some in my fridge)

Having organized their mobile transportation, the Germans look on as their translator is trying to decipher bulgarian reading from a dictionary. The German understands bulgarian as much as the donkey understands german.

Mountaintroops (Gebirgsjaegern) pause to play cards, smoke, and listen to guitar and acordeon music in the heights somewhere in Bulgaria, Spring 1941.

In Yugoslavia, a German soldiers has attracted a large group of children, with his two seat motorcycle.
The kids have probably never seen this before. They get the priviledge to be fotographed in it.

Yugoslavian kids and some women pose with a wehrmacht man in his BMW motorcycle. Certainly the first time they get to sit in one.

Into Greece -

After going through Romania, crossing the Danube, through Bulgaria the Germans march into Yugoslavia and cross the mountains into Greece.

A field artillery piece is towed up the mountain road in Greece.
