The 19th Artillery Regiment was involved in the battle of Marasesti (6 August - 24 July 1917). It was positioned north of Prisaca forest and Doaga village. The 24th Russian Division was deployed north of the Romanian positions, with the Russian artillery deployed near the village of Padureni. |

In the list of Romanian soldiers that received the St. George Order for actions in the 1877-78 War, I have found a serg. Ion Dumitrescu from the 1st Rosiori Regiment. He received the 4th class in silver. He very likely is your Jean Demetre. However, I find it strange that he is cited for actions near Stara Zagora, as Romanian troops did not venture south of Plevna too much, because of the poor logistics that required them to stay close to the Danube. That is why, after Plevna fell, the Romanian army headed west towards Vidin and Belogradchik, covering the right wing of the Russian advance to Adrianople. In total 95 Romanians received the St. George Order. Only one received it twice. |

The Russian Order of St. George was founded by Empress Catherine on 26 November 1769. If I remember correctly, it was awarded in four classes exclusively to officers for extreme bravery in the face of the enemy. Hence, it was the Russian equivalent of the Romanian Order of Michael the Brave. For similar deeds, the NCOs and soldiers received the Cross of St. George (which was therefore much like the Romanian war badge of the Military Virtue). It has to be mentioned that the Order of St. George was an order of merit (along with the Order of St. Vladimir) and as such nobody could qualify for it by birth only. Thus, if I remember correctly, the members of the Imperial Russian family received all the other Russian orders of knighthood, but not the Order of St. George or the Order of St. Vladimir (they had to qualify fairly for them). |

To complete my previous post, Emperor Alexander I who revived the order in 1801 received only the fourth class of the Order of St. George on 13 December 1805 for his contribution to the Battle of Austerlitz. And Emperor Alexander III received only the second class of the order on 30 September 1877 for his service in the war against Turkey. |

I really doubt that they were referring to the Order of St. George. There were only eight second classes awarded during the 1877-1878 war, one of them being the heir to the Russian throne (see above). It is thus quite unlikely that one of the other seven recipients was a sergeant of the Romanian Army (usually the recipients were Generals or Admirals - 121 or 124 of them). Anyhow, the list is interesting, as it provides the names of the recipients. Thanks. |

I was also very surprised by it, but that is what it has been printed. Maybe 3rd class? It can happen to loose an "I" during printing. |
Posted by: Carol I December 13, 2004 08:01 am
I was not questioning the class, but rather the reference to the Order of St. George. I guess the authors of the list did not make any difference between the Order of St. George (reserved for the officers) and the Cross of St. George (awarded to lower ranks). The confusion is understandable to a certain extent, as the awards were connected and had the same ribbon. Furthermore, during the 1877-1878 war both awards had four classes. Take a look at http://nubirus.chat.ru/HomepageEnglish.htm for more information on the Cross of St. George. Unfortunately the author sometimes makes reference to it as to "an order", but that was not the Order of St. George. The Order of St. George had a white enamelled badge in gold, while the Cross of St. George had only a metal cross (golden for first and second classes and silver for third and fourth classes). |
Posted by: Carol I December 13, 2004 08:16 am |
There is one more thing in the list Victor posted that puzzles me. It seems that the Order of St. George was certainly awarded to King Carol I (third class), Gen. Cernat (fourth class) and Maj. Candiano-Popescu (fourth class). The confusion is about the awards for the other officers, all of them second lieutenants. The reference to the "fourth class in silver" suggests that in fact they received the Cross of St. George. The question then is why did they receive the cross and not the order? Did the Russian authorities not consider them officers? Were they NCOs which were raised to officer rank following their military deeds (I would be surprised if that was the case for all of them)? |

New names to be added to Victor's list. Thanks, Igor. By the way, can you look into the registry and solve the "mystery" of the awards to the officers? Did they receive the Order of St. George or the Cross of St. George? |

Romanians were also awarded Imperial Russian orders of Saint Vladimir, Saint Anne and Saint Stanislav. Under what conditions were these orders givin to Romanians ? Where the Romanians held to the same criteria award rules given to Czarist officers or were they given these awards under different conditions ? |

Regarding the 4th class Saint George crosses in silver awarded to Romanians: I have several Romanian medal bars in my collection with the Saint George 4th class silver crosses on them. All are numbered. Is there a way to research the serial number on the cross to be able to identify 1- if the bar is original and 2- who the bar was awarded to ? |

Thr Order Of st. George - only for Officers !!! This bulgarian colonel-leutenent in 1885 y. - in 1912-1913 Military Minister of Bulgaria . In 1877-78 War N. Nikifirov was NCO and receive Russian st. George cross . |
Posted by: Carol I December 14, 2004 07:54 am
Thank you for confirming that. But were there any instances when officers had received only the Cross of St. George instead of the Order of St. George? What I mean is that they already had the officer rank when they showed bravery on the battlefield and yet they were awarded only the Cross of St. George. I am asking that because in the list posted by Victor there is quite a long list of 14 second lieutenants who have received only the fourth class of the Cross of St. George and it is quite improbable that they were all NCOs during the war (though not impossible). But if that was the case, I am surprised by the very small number of officers receiving the order (only three) in comparison to the number of soldiers and NCOs receiving the cross. Did the same proportion appear in the Russian army as well? |

I am wondering why would the Rumanian source alter the person's actual name appearing in documents to fit current spelling standards? I see from the document presented by Igor that the spelling was Demetre, not Dumitru, etc. Col. Dénes |
Posted by: Carol I December 14, 2004 03:44 pm
Maybe the names in the Russian document are written with the French spelling (quite common at that time). Hence that source altered the actual name of the person, while the Romanian source gives the correct name. |

Thank you very much for the information. So there were only two orders of St. George awarded to the Romanian officers (in contrast to the 1877-8 war when there were three awards). |

Only now I have realised the date? Is 15 March 1918 the correct date for the award to King Ferdinand I? Who made the award? The Kerensky government had been overthrown on 25.10/07.11.1917, i.e., more than 4 months before the stated award date. |

The Kerensky government had been overthrown on 25.10/07.11.1917 and as far as I know the Bolshevik government suppressed the system of orders of the Czarist regime (that had in fact been maintained that far by the provisional government who took the power after the overthrow of the Czar). |

Russian Imperial (White) Army was to 1920 y. |
Posted by: Carol I February 10, 2005 11:07 pm |
Yes, I know that. And probably you refer to the fact that third and fourth class awards were authorised by a Council of St. George. But weren't the actual awards made by the head of the Russian state (up to 1917 the Czar and later presumably by the head of the provisional government)? Do you mean that between 1917 and 1920 (and maybe earlier - I do not have enough knowledge on the Russian orders, but I would gladly like to learn) there was not a single award authority, but rather lower level (army, corps, divisional etc.) councils that could make the awards for this prestigious order? |

Major Alexandru Candiano-Popescu came from a previous post by Victor which gave three names of Romanian awardees:
A previous post of yours also gave three awardees for this Russian order.
You have confirmed this far Prince (later King) Carol I and General Alexandru Cernat. So it must be one more Romanian officer on the lists for the 1877-1878 War. Try a different spelling for the major: "Kandiano-Popescu", "Alexandru Popescu", "Popesco" etc.
Alexandru Cernat was "one-star-general". Isn't it the same as the "Major General" in the Russian Army? |

After this short biography comes a memo forwarded by Candiano Popescu to the Minister of War in 1895 regarding a controversial issue of the soldier who captured the Ottoman flag at Grivice Tabla: Grigore Ion (from his vanatori battalion) or Grigore al Lucai (from the 16th Dorobanti Regiment) |

Yes, private Grigorie Ion was assisted by coporal Nica Vasile and sergeant Stan Gheorghe, but he was the one who took it. Candiano Popescu describes an episode with a captain Negoescu from the 16th Dorobanti Regiment who attempted to take the flag from Grigorie Ion and only the major's intervention stopped it. |

Records for Saint George soldiers crosses were more then likely not kept in 1916-1917. There are many reports due to moral problems and a high degree of desertion in the Imperial Russian Army, that officers would show up at the front lines with with large boxes of crosses and hand them out to everyone who was still there as a moral booster. |

Russian orders awarded to Romanians between 1866-1879: - 92 Orders of St. George - 19 Orders of St. Vladimir - 171 Orders of St. Anne - 373 Orders of St. Stanislas |

I do not think that this is the correct number of orders awarded to Romanians (see the discussion in the beginning of the thread). I guess most of these awards were in fact Crosses of St. George. |

I see. Well, I would really like to make some light into this story. Victor has http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=1617&view=findpost&p=20505 a list with 16 Romanian officers receiving St. George awards for the 1877-1878 war, of which it was confirmed that only two have received the Order of St. George. The other ones, all second lieutenants, appear to have received only the Cross of St. George, as if the Russian authorities not consider them officers and hence 'unworthy' of the Order of St. George. Was this some sort of a 'discrimination' of the Russian authorities or were they all NCOs who were raised to officer rank after the war? My http://www.worldwar2.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=1617&view=findpost&p=20529 regarding their situation has unfortunately remained unanswered. |

Continuously in the midst his unit he has bloodily repelled the 12 fierce attacks of the enemy who had wanted to break the front at that point. Being wounded three times on the 21 August 1917 he had continued to stay on positions maintaining the command of his company until nightfall. |

I have found a reference to King Carol I receiving the second class of the Russian Order of St George. Thus, on 5 September 1877 he had received the third class of the order for "the excellent deeds in the war with the Turks". Then, on 29 November 1877 he had received the second class of the order "for the conquest of the Plevna stronghold and the capture of Osman Pasha's army on 28 November 1877". On the same date he had also received the collar of the Russian Order of St. Andrew. |
